Does anyone out there have advice on building a home business such as how to market, how to approach people, how to follow up without being pushy or bothersome? I totally believe in my products, but a sales gal, I am not! I'd love to hear from all you experienced home business people about what works for you and what doesn't! Please share :)

I have been in direct sales for over 6 years now and I really think you just have to take a deep breath and talk to people, and don't think that you are bothering them.  I am always respectful of other if they tell me that they are not interested or maybe later, but I am not big on forcing people to try my skincare line, even though I know they would love it if they did.  Just remember that they might love what you have to offer, but they will not know about it unless you tell them.  Good luck!

If you get a second to check out my website I would love your feedback on our cutome blended skincare.  :)  www.VotreVu.com/Bliss

Hi Karen! I think there are alot of ways to talk about your products without being salesy. The biggest advice I can give is to offer value, value, value. For example, if your product solves a problem, give tips on how it solves the problem (5 ways xyz can make your home sparkle, etc).

I also find that offering tips without even mentioning your product is helpful. Say you have a kitchen floor cleaner. Offer tips on buffing out hardwood scratches that don't involve your product. Just offering some value will attract people to YOU. Have conversations with people at dinner parties and networking events in a casual (not pushy) manner.

People buy from people they like. Give them a reason to like and trust you first and they will buy.

Build your email list...and then send out great coupons and offers once week or so. Do a contest or giveaway.

I help women with their business ideas for a living (in addition to running a mom blog), so if I can help you further, don't hesitate to contact me! Good luck!!

Whatever you do, believe in yourself and your product. I do some photography on the side. On a few occaisions I have not 'sold' myself as well. I did not gain the client, only to see the photos after and know that I could have done a better job. Defenitely believe in yourself.

Thanks for all the replies! They were all insightful and I plan to use all of the advice given. Especially "take a deep breath"!

I just finished reading the book "The E-Myth Revisited" by Michael Gerber. You will learn the why's and how's of running a  business. If you haven't already done so, you can check out their web site http://www.e-myth.com

Thanks, Denise - I will check it out!
