I respond to some comments-and definitely if they ask me a question! If I don't want to share the answer with others, I e-mail them privately-I love, love, love my comments!

I reply to each and every comment. It's easy to do when you only have 60 or so followers and about 3 comments a week LOL! I may have a different answer for you in 100 years when I get a few more readers...

I respond most times to comments but on my blog not to the email fo the person.

I reply to comments only if they'll be of interest to my readers. I'm a newer blogger,l so I'm interested if the majority of responders feel it's important to just say "thanks" for commenting?

Personally, I always try to respond to comments that aren't just LOL or something similar.. It thrills me to pieces when someone comments on my blog so I want them to know that it's special to me :) With that said, most dont' leave an email address so I have to respond on my own blog in comments to them.

I respond to most of the comments left on my blog, but I don't have hundreds of people commenting, so that makes it easier. If someone just posts a comment saying something like "I agree" or "great idea" than I don't feel like that warrants a response. I enjoy the community of blogging though, so I try to respond somehow.

I'm so happy you posted this question, and thankful for all these answers! Been wondering this myself, since I'm new, and I wasn't quite sure of the etiquette. Comment back in my blog, their blog, both? Is there any notification of responses to comments if left on your own blog...in other words, do they have to come and check back to see if there's an answer? I've commented on lots and I don't get notification...wouldn't know if they answered me back in their own blog unless I go back and checked. Hope that made sense...thanks again for the info!

My website/blog "mentor" tells me that it takes a long time and a lot of readers to get comments. I've had a few, but often my posts aren't the type anyone would need to comment on. I'm just posting away and not being too concerned about it.

I do from time to time. I don't do it on every comment because there are times it just feels in-organic to respond. On the other hand, if I love what someone said or if they ask a question, I definitely take the time to answer.

I'm also a firm believer that it depends on the size of the blog. When I hit 10,000 views per day and 300 comments (LOL) how will I respond to them all without the help of a housekeeper and nanny???

I always try to. I figure if someone has taken their time to not only read my ramblings but to formulate a comment, it's my duty to reply. I do always do my very best to go visit the blogs of every commenter as well. The only hitch here is work, kids, life... ahhh would that I could just blog surf and comment all day long :)
