I'm an incorrigible eco mom. I went out of my way to keep my sensitive, artistic son safe. Then, at 16, he started running away. My husband and I spent loads of money getting him safely to 18, by sending him to wilderness therapy (snow trekking in the Cascades for 5 wks) and 16 months of behavioral health therapy in a private home for oppositional teenage boys. Though he doesn't have a serious substance problem, at 22, he's furious with us. He hasn't spoken to us since Christmas and lives independently in Phoenix. After I read this, I wondered if we didn't go overboard in trying to keep him safe.
