I tend to make edits after my blog posts are finished and posted. However, I read in Blogging for Dummies that this is not desirable. I understand that readers pick up the info quickly, on the other hand, I enjoy editing and polishing the copy, or adding thoughts. Sometimes I have to fix errors, like misspelling Dr. Seuss (groan).
Do you edit after posting, and how bad is it and why?
Do the readers re-publish it after each edit? Or do they just post the first one? I often go back and fix any mistakes that I spot - and since I blog late at night, they are leigion! Anyway, I guess it would be a drag if the readers re-published the same article every time you tweaked it, but otherwise, I don't see a problem.
I worked in the newspaper industry for a long time and it was always a BIG no-no to change something online after it was posted, unless you noted the change. However, with a blog I think it's more flexible. I change typos without making a note.
You can certainly change your thoughts or opinions, but I suggest you make a note that says: update or something. For readers that return, they will appreciate your change of thought or that you came back and made another comment on the same topic. It will keep it transparent and make it seem more real to your readers I think -- more like a conversation, not that you are trying to make the perfect post.
It's okay for spelling/grammar or layout errors or any editing for the first say 10 minutes after posting but I wouldn't change to much around later. Most people read the post after it first comes out and won't get the best. If you need to do that, don't publish the post at first but save as a draft. After a night's sleep or something, go back and fix anything you need to and then publish.
