I am not opposed to hosting advertising on my blog at all, but recently I was approached to do a ad for a 1 year spot on my side bar.  They wanted to know how much I would charge.  The only thing is it is for a gambling site, which I am not to keen on...Thoughts?
Any advise would be appreciated!
Thanks
Emily

If you don't feel comfortable don't do it. You have to stay true to your values.
Agreed. It is your blog, and you need to like what you're doing.

If I was made a similar offer, I would probably decline... I have a craft blog, so I would want sponsors that I feel appeal to the readers (Craft stores, fabric, stamps, etc). I would be concerned that a misplaced ad would detract from the look and feel of my blog.

That said, I do live in Las Vegas, and have nothing against gambling... so if the price was right... I can't say that I wouldn't go for it. : )

Emily, I do not recommend linking to a gambling site. Google considers sites like that to be a "bad neighborhood" to be linked to.

What is the page rank of your site? On my PR 3 blog, I charge $120 for a year of text link advertising. On my PR 5 blog, I charge $150. I'd like to get more but advertisers don't seem to want to budge.
Oooh not to jump in here and steal the post, but I'd be interested in advertising on your craft blog! :)

Yes, I agree with the others...don't approve ads unless you would want them on their. Specifically you probably want to stay away from making money online, gambling, and other "adult" sites of course...those probably won't appeal to your audience anyway so don't waste your readers time and instead advertising things of value.
Thanks all - I wrote her and told her I was not comfortable advertising gambling on a family blog.

I knew it wasn't something I was comfortable with.

IMO you aren't charging enough for your text links ads. I get a lot more. You should be able to up your rates. With a PR 4 blog I charge twice what you charge for your PR5, although I give a month free if a year is purchased. As you can see on my blog, I have lots of text link ads. :)

I agree that if you don't feel comfortable, then that advertiser isn''t for you. I've been approached by several companies that I don't feel compatible with (makes me wonder what they see in my blog that I am missing). Although the $ has been tempting, I've passed as their offers as their products just don't jibe with my blog's theme or my values.
I would not do it as you must stay true to yourself.
Definitely! I've turned down two guaranteed advertisers because they were direct competitors of another advertiser. Now I have a loyal, long term advertiser because they appreciated that I didn't accept it as some other bloggers had.

Always go with your gut.

I agree with everyone else...you have to be true to who you are and what you would like to support. I would kindly say no.
Everyone is sending me information about what I don't really know. I asked anyone who has a sample media kit to send it to me and I haven't yet gotten a respond. So I am re-posting to see if any member would like to share one with me. Happy Labor Day week end to all MOMS!
