Need advice...my blog designer has left me high and dry and now I don't know what to do!

To make a long story short, at the beginning of July I entered into an agreement with a blog designer to create a new design for me on wordpress and move my content and my followers from blogger to wordpress. After much emailing and prodding I finally got her to install it on WP two weeks ago, but she hasn't linked my social icons, given me a favicon, transferred my followers, etc. I've spent a lot of money already on this, not to mention valuable time (I wanted this finished to be started on WP at the beginning of August and now it's September), and I cannot get get her to respond to my emails anymore. I have done all I can to take care of things myself (attempting to self-learn CSS and FTP servers is a headache and a half).

I am seeking advice and support from you ladies. I am so sad and don't know what to do at this point, as my patience has run out. I was so excited about this transition and it's become depressing now. What would you do if you were in my position? I don't even know if I have any recourse with her as far as refund because of her terms and conditions.

Anyhow, I'd appreciate any input. Thanks for reading :)

Ok, I don't know if this is the best thing to do, my first inclination would be to let her know that you will have to make your dissatisfaction public if your work is not completed in a timely manner. I am not saying a smear campaign, but I think it is ok to speak out when you have had a bad experience with any company. But I would give her a chance to correct the situation first.

I would also closely review her terms and conditions, or ask someone to look at them for you.

I am so sorry that this happened to you! I know several bloggers that had a similar experience with one particular designer, and it was very frustrating and demoralizing for them.

Summer, I am so sorry this has happened. I had a similar experience about two years ago and since then I handle all of my own website stuff. However, I sent a final email to the web designer telling him that I would report him if either my monies weren't returned or the website wasn't completed. It worked and within hours I received an email from PayPal saying my money had been returned.

I hope this is your outcome too. But in the event that it is not, it is fairly simple to link icons and such. Let us know how things turn out. Wishing you much success!
If she won't return your money, you can easily take her to small claims court. I think it costs $35 or so to file a claim - not much. Sounds like you definitely have cause for getting your money back. Know that even if she won't respond, there are ways to reclaim the funds (not sure about lost opportunity cost).

I *almost* had to do this with a website developer; luckily, he caved and returned my money (after not building my site, as contracted).
This seems to be all too common. I think its because a lot of web designers are young and don't understand the concept of business. Hopefully, Summer will have some success at recouping her money.

Thank you all for your advice and support. I emailed again the other night, and if I don't hear from her by Friday I will let her know that I will be seeking further action.

I agree with Stefanie, in that I think when you're dealing with someone over the computer, there's no face to face contact, and therefore, much less accountability. It's too bad, really.
Hey Summer,

I am looking to move my blogger blog to WP and have been contacting some blog designers. Would you mind sending me a message on here with her name, just in case she's one of the ones I am in contact with? I don't want to run into the same problem!

Thanks,
Leilani
Summer that is so sad. I've been trying to learn the ropes to doing all this web stuff myself because a.) it's super expensive to pay someone else and b) I've heard a version of your story too many times.
It's really unfortunate that some people do business this way.

If I felt more confident in my abilities I'd offer to help you for free, but honestly I might make your facebook button direct to twitter and your twitter direct to amazon, so I'm probably not your best bet! LOL
Thanks for all your support and advice. Just to follow-up, I was finally able to get a response by asking for a refund. She told me she "didn't see" all my prior emails *sigh* Nevertheless, she helped me get it finished (although a lot I had to figure out on my own) and I'm back in business.
Glad to hear it!

As a web designer myself, this sickens me. To think that there are people out there who are unprofessional enough to ignore emails is horrific. If this web designer was in over her head, she should have said something.

I guess a few rules to follow should include meeting the person face to face (if at all possible), and getting tons of references. I truly hope this was a unique situation, and the designer doesn't treat all her clients with such disrespect.
oh my gosh I hope it is not the exact same person who did this to me. Exact same situation. still waiting since July
