Preparing Your Child to Read
Hi Everyone,
What a great place to meet.
My goal in life is to help as many parents as possible to prepare their children for school, especially in the areas of Reading, Writing and Spelling.
The first step is to make certain that your child's oral language is improving daily. This means that they are listening to good role models, practising speaking, and, listening to about five stories or content books a day.Listening to great literature will improve their vocabulary and also their knowledge of how books work. This last point is called, Concepts of Print.
Then children need to be alert and attentive so that they can sequence,discriminate and manipulate sounds. According to research, this area, called Phonological Awareness, is the greatest predictor of reading success..... so learn a lot about it and support your child.

We started reading to both of our kids pretty much right when they came out of the womb. As they grew up, we made it a nightly routine to choose a book (we collected a LOT of them) and read together. When they were smaller, we'd read then point out occasional words that we knew they'd be able to sound out.
Our kids today are excellent readers and writers...our son in particular. He scores extremely high on all of his reading (and math) and is a finalist for the Scripps Spelling Bee next week for placing in the top 5% of spellers at his middle school. I attribute this to reading. And no...he's NOT an "A" student. Typical teen boy that struggles to stay focused in school and hates homework! But the potential and foundation is there!!
