I started blogging in July 2010, 3 months after I found out I was pregnant with my first son. I started it to keep my friends and family up to date about my pregnancy, but I have enjoyed keeping it updated since Owen's birth, and now I write about everything that goes on in our lives.
I have 1,000,000 questions, but I'll start with this :)
I would like purchase a domain name so that I can have more freedom with my blog (twobluelines.wordpress.com) Is there anything I should know before I do this? I am going to rename my blog since it's not really conducive to what I'm writing about now. Should I buy the address through wordpress or through something like godaddy.com? Also, once I buy the address, would it be advantageous to upgrade to wordpress.org?
Where should I start?! AHHH!!
As for buying the domain, that is easy! Buying on Godaddy is ok. But, depending on what you decide to do with hosting I would hold off on buying until you decide where to do hosting. Although even if you buy a domain on Godaddy you can still host elsewhere. And, yes... I totally recommend switching over to self-hosted Wordpress.org. You can check out an article that I wrote not too long ago at http://www.socialmoms.com/tech/blogging-platform-software-website/. You have a lot more options on Wordpress to get it working just the way that you want!
Were you planning on building the site yourself? If not, I'm happy to chat with you about options, etc. Just send me a message on here or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. :)
Either way, good luck!!
Always go with a self hosted wordpress blog. If you need referrals for someone to work with you can email me at email@example.com. Good luck and happy blogging.
Jamie, Kris gave some good advice.
Also, when you get your domain, make sure you can buy up the .com, .net, .biz, etc. (You can "point" them in GoDaddy to go to your main .com blog).
It may seem like a lot to invest (do a search for GoDaddy discount codes online). But if your blog turns into a business for you - and someone else owns the other domains - it'll be hard to buy them back.
I've also known bloggers who saw that the .com wasn't available for the domain they liked, so thought it was OK just to get the .net. Their blogs turned out to be very successful and they can't buy the .com from the other owner. So it's sort of ruined their success a little bit.
Finally, you may want to buy domains for your name and your kids' names (at least the .com) if you have the spare money.
Do some keyword research first before you buy anything and see what words you will be targeting. Having an search egine friendly site starts with having great architecture. Plan your site out from top to bottom what are the 3 keywords of your homepage you will be targeting, what are the keywords for each of the pages on your site as well. Who are you targeting, how will you get traffic to you, what are you offering to make people come to you.
My advice do a complete site layout and then look at your competition to see who you are up against. Can you beat them? If the sites you are competing against have a PR4 or higher good luck it will take a great deal of work. Your keywords are just that key to your success.
