One of my goals as a parent is to reduce the amount of time we spend watching television. My kids and I are happier and more connected when the TV (and computer) are off and we spend time together reading, talking and adventuring.

Going tv-free cold turkey seems unrealistic for us. We still enjoy TV, but I'm serious about reducing our viewing. So I had the idea of starting gradually, and think that going TV free on Tuesdays and Thursdays would be an interesting challenge. I blogged about it here.

Would you like to reduce your viewing time? What do you think of limiting TV in your family?
If you want to join in and try TV free Tuesdays and Thursdays, please comment and go for it. It's my goal to write about going TV free and occasionally feature other blogs with information and experiences about going TV free or limiting TV time. Most of all it's my goal to enjoy and experience family life more fully.

hi, id go for LIMITING TV/COMPUTER-TIME, because i actually do that to my son. TV-FREE is something impossible for me. LOL. i still think we need it once in a while :)
We went tv-free when the kids were very little, and I've never regretted it for a minute. In fact, I would say our quality of life is much better.

There are tons of great resources to help you on your journey. Check out www.tvturnoff.org. They are the sponsors of TV turnoff week, which is the third week of April every year. You might want to help organize the week for your school. They make it easy to coordinate and I found it very fun and rewarding.

There are some blogs about living tv free. The first one that comes to mind is www.unplugyourkids.com. The writer features lots of great projects and crafts. I love her ideas.

Good luck, and I wouldn't be afraid to go cold turkey. It wasn't bad for us at all.
When my husband and I moved to the country we decided to go TV free. Now after 6 months we bought satelite internet because we play games together as a family on MMORPG's. But we found when we do the TV thing that we all go to our seperate rooms and don't converse. Its been almost 2 years. I miss it every now and then but I mostly watch the shows I can't live without on the internet. At the first of the year we are getting TV again because we would like a variety of things to do. But we did try it. It is doable. We are a more cohesive family unit now. (He has a prior family with 3 sons so we had to get to know eachother somehow) But my circumstances are not everyone elses.
I think my kids would be fine if we limit our tv watching. It's my husband that I'd worry about. hee hee
