So glad you posted this topics, its been fun reading the comment from others. I'm trying my first giveaway right now and am definitely seeing an increase in traffic. We'll see if any of those hang around afterward. I also just signed up for twitter yesterday so we'll see if that helps at all.
Most of my readers come from related forums. I write a knitting/quilting/sewing/etc. blog, and am a member of a couple knitting/crochet forums. I joined and participate because I enjoy them and gain a lot from them, but being a productive member there leads people to want to check out my blog, and some stick around. I also believe in providing something tangible to my readers. I have a few original knitting designs, and I offer them for free on my blog. People love free stuff, so those always get a lot of attention! And I can post about them on one of the knitting forums (which also includes a pattern database), so there are people constantly discovering my designs and coming over for a look. One of those designs was even featured on a very well-known knitting blog (the poster discovered it via the knitting forum), and the result was--after the unsustained huge traffic spike--a doubling of my daily readership. It's still not a ton of readers, but it's a good start!
I'm new to review/chat type blogging so my readership is still low but my blogging is a bit slow but I think commenting and getting involved with other people's blogs really helps. If you give support you'll get support
