Last Saturday I attended a baby shower. Most of the guests that sat with me got surprised when I told them I have to leave earlier because my daughter need to sleep at 9pm. They claimed their children normally won't get on bed before 11 at night.
We put the little ones down before 8 every night--a strict routine, to help them sleep and keep them on schedule. Plus it had the advantage of giving mom and dad some sanity time.
As they got older, we didn't stress about bedtime as much. I still remind my 13yo to hit the sack around 10 or 10:30 on weekdays. On weekends, I really don't care. As for the older boys, they go to their rooms and do their own thing and don't bother us. As long as they keep their grades up, I figure they're getting enough sleep.
My twins have been a a strict sleep schedule their whole lives. they are in bed about 7 now and are 16 moths old. they usually "talk" to each other for a bit and are up between 6:30 and 7. of course there is the occasional nightmare evening when one cries for a while just because she doesn't want to go to bed - not because there is something wrong. I usually just let her cry it out after I know she is OK because I don't want her to think that she can get up every time she feels like it. bed time is sacred to my marriage. We do take them out now to friends for dinner and if we are going to be there later than 8 we bring their travel beds and put them down for a few hours.....seems to work great now.
11pm is way too late, I mean I don't know how old that child is, but even an older child, if they have school, is kind of late.
Both my kids 2 and 5 get stories read at 7:30 and are in bed by 8pm. Sometimes they just sit in their bed awake and I can hear them but by 8:30 they are asleep.
My 2 year old even naps for 2-3 hours in the afternoon. Both don't wake up til 7am and that is because I wake them up.
If I didn't make them go to bed at a decent time, I would not get any time for myself and to work.
But I guess to each his own, what ever works for one may not work for another....
My daughter goes to sleep at 10 o'clock in the evening. She is 6 years old. When she was a baby sometimes she went to bed after 10 o'clock in the evening. I think that 9- 10p.m. the most suitable hours for the children to get on bed.
My children are 2 & 4. They go to be at 8 with extremely rare exception.
Sometimes my son (2) will sing for over an hour in his bed, but they are tucked in and it bed.
I agree with the other posters 11 is too late - too late for mom & dad!!!
My children also nap from 2-4 during the day. Daughter (4) no longer sleeps, but she has quiet time in her room. No TV just quiet play on her own. She does lover her TAG reader though.
My 2 year old goes down now around 8:00 pm (because of daylight savings) and sleeps until 8:00 am. My 3 month old goes to sleep at about 8:30 pm. I LOVE the book, Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child. Protecting bed times and having a routiine is very important to us.
