My 8 year old son (he'll be 9 next month) started growing a few darker and thicker hairs under his arms and in his pubic area. Is this the start of puberty? I thought that puberty started at 12 or 13. I know everyone says that the hormones in our food today are speeding things up, but could this really be at 8 years old? Is anyone else dealing with this?

HI, I am no expert but I went through the same thing with my now 19 yr. I was shocked when my son came to me at 8 almost 9 stating almost the exact same thing. I did mention it to the doctor and he said everyone is different and I really do not need to worry about it. My son is now 19 and will be 20 in early Dec and he is perfectly healthy and a normal wise guy...ya know how boys are. But I have always been curious about this myself, was it normal and why, so please if you hear anything else regarding this let me know.

The funny thing is my oldest had to go on medication to induce puberty.(they are half brothers but it is still weird)
Thanks for replying! That makes me feel better. I was in shock when he showed me! How old was your oldest when they had to induce puberty?
My oldest was 14 and thankfully they did it b/c soon after he started the meds he had a serious mishap(thankfully he is still here with us) and we found he had a heart condition WPW. The WPW may have been the cause of his small stature and delay. He had surgery 2 yrs later. Now is will be 24 in Sept and he is fine, small but fine.(he is like 5'5 - 5'6..he says 5'7 but no way!!)
