Please follow me.  I will follow those who follow me - just let me know.

Being the mom of a boy was mostly a great experience.  It was our two girls that turned my hair gray!!

Kerry, you are right about the new 2 year old being at the bottom of your 6 year old's big change.   For 4 years he was the cute one that got all the attention.  then suddenly this small baby stole all his thunder - he felt pushed aside and ignored.  A HUGE self esteem gremlin now sits on his shoulder, telling him ways to get your attention - good or bad, it doesn't matter to your 6 year old.  Any attention is better than none.

It will take a little time, but once you identify the problem it is easy to fix.  Try giving him special time with you and your husband every day.  One of you mind the two year old while you or your husband take your son for a short walk. Ask him about his day, toss a ball together in the yard, or read him a special story.  PRAISE him lavishly for every little thing he does right.  Tell him he is much smarter, and can do all sorts of things his sibling can't.  Give him some small chore he can be in charge of.   Take the teacher into your confidence. Get her on-board with the praise and knocking that nasty gremlin off his shoulder.  The idea is to make him feel special, important, and the brave and smarter big brother who looks after his younger sibling.

Once he feels he is receiving your loving attention and praise once more, and he regains his sense of importance and PLACE in your family, his bad behavior will go away.  When a child feels displaced, for whatever reason, whether it is really the case or just their imagination, acting out is their answer.  In their minds, it is better to get attention for bad behavior than NO attention at all.

A new baby brings a huge change into a child's life. I even wrote a picture book about Big Changes, and how they can affect small children. Death, divorce, a move away from friends and family OR  a new cute baby:  they can all make kids this age act out.

Do Let me know how it works out, mate.

Hi ladies.  I am mom to two boys, 6 & 2.  I was wondering if I could ask for advice...We are having serious behavior issues with both, mostly with the older.  He is in kindergarten at a public school.  His attitude seemed to change after his little brother was born, then has gotten worse since going to school full time (he was in our church pre-school for 3 half days for two years prior).

I am wondering about home-schooling, but my husband is really against that.  I am not sure if we are dealing with normal boy stuff, or if there is something else going on.

Any advice would be appreciated!  I am in the process of redoing my blog and hope to have another one up and running soon.  So if you are following me, I may ask you to follow my new blog in a few days.
