Karen, you are so right.  I gave up doing reviews long ago.  I just hated to contact eager authors and tell them that in all honestly I could not recommend their book.  My stomach would churn, and some of them did not react well.  Sigh.  I much prefer writing books to reviewing them.  Guess being a writer, and running a manuscript critique service, has made me extra picky.

Hi, Stefanie,

I do book reviews, and while I have every intent of completing a review of a particular book, if that book is poorly written, I will email the author explaining I cannot do the review.

Unfortunately, I had to do this recently and the author was very disappointed, while I feel awful, as a reviewer my responsibility is to the reader. I cannot give a good review to a book that is lacking in almost every area of good writing.

Not following through with an explanation is kinder than writing a bad review.

I always advise authors to take the necessary steps to create a quality and polished book before publishing it. That means learning the craft of writing, belonging to a critique group, and hiring an editor to do a final edit.

Have you ever sent your book out for review and the book reviewer didn't keep up their end of the bargain? Check out these posts Why book reviews are important for authors and When book reviewers don't review your book - how to follow up!
