@ Karen. I agree wholeheartedly. A reviewer's responsibility is to the author. Many years ago when I was freelancing, I received a book that I couldn't give a positive review to. I emailed the author and explained my position and asked him if he wanted me to proceed with the review. I didn't receive a response but I didn't publish my review of his book. Thanks for your perspective!

Kids driving you crazy already?  I have a SHORT solution.

e-mail me here < mfinke at > and I will send you a FREE copy of my kid's time-travel e-book adventure.  I took the characters from my last 3 books and threw them together into fun adventure.

This won't stop them driving you crazy for long -

Karen, you are so right.  I gave up doing reviews long ago.  I just hated to contact eager authors and tell them that in all honestly I could not recommend their book.  My stomach would churn, and some of them did not react well.  Sigh.  I much prefer writing books to reviewing them.  Guess being a writer, and running a manuscript critique service, has made me extra picky.

Hi, Stefanie,

I do book reviews, and while I have every intent of completing a review of a particular book, if that book is poorly written, I will email the author explaining I cannot do the review.

Unfortunately, I had to do this recently and the author was very disappointed, while I feel awful, as a reviewer my responsibility is to the reader. I cannot give a good review to a book that is lacking in almost every area of good writing.

Not following through with an explanation is kinder than writing a bad review.

I always advise authors to take the necessary steps to create a quality and polished book before publishing it. That means learning the craft of writing, belonging to a critique group, and hiring an editor to do a final edit.
