Reviewers should not be paid unless it is a salary from a newspaper or magazine that employs them to review books. Private reviewers don't like publishing reviews that are unfavorable. if you go with the big magazines, your review is published whether it is favorable or not - that's the risk you take.

Many years ago when I was freelancing, I received a book that I couldn't give a positive review to. I emailed the author and explained my position and asked him if he wanted me to proceed with the review. I didn't receive a response but I didn't publish my review of his book. Thanks for your perspective!
