I also agree with Karen and Stefanie.  Reviewers should not be paid unless it is a salary from a newspaper or magazine that employs them to review books.  Private reviewers don't like publishing reviews that are unfavorable.  if you go with the big magazines, your review is published whether it is favorable or not - that's the risk you take.

@ Karen. I agree wholeheartedly. A reviewer's responsibility is to the author. Many years ago when I was freelancing, I received a book that I couldn't give a positive review to. I emailed the author and explained my position and asked him if he wanted me to proceed with the review. I didn't receive a response but I didn't publish my review of his book. Thanks for your perspective!

Kids driving you crazy already?  I have a SHORT solution.

e-mail me here < mfinke at > and I will send you a FREE copy of my kid's time-travel e-book adventure.  I took the characters from my last 3 books and threw them together into fun adventure.

This won't stop them driving you crazy for long -

Karen, you are so right.  I gave up doing reviews long ago.  I just hated to contact eager authors and tell them that in all honestly I could not recommend their book.  My stomach would churn, and some of them did not react well.  Sigh.  I much prefer writing books to reviewing them.  Guess being a writer, and running a manuscript critique service, has made me extra picky.
