Karen, I agree with you about children's books with a "message." The message needs to be clear and not preachy. Unfortunately, today's publisher seems to want more than just a fun story for kids to enjoy. I think that's a pity. Sometimes it takes sheer fun to HOOK a reluctant reader. Reluctant readers can smell a "message" a mile away!! Why not have both kinds of books? And there is no reason why message stories can's also be fun and entertaining.

"Taconi and Claude - Double Trouble," my mid-grade boy's adventure set in the Aussie outback has gone through its galley phase, and should be available momentarily. A TRAILER + fun CLUES to the story can be found here - http://www.margotfinke.com

Hi everyone!  I haven't posted here in a while (but have been reading everyone's posts, blogs, etc.!) and I was hoping to ask a favor.  My little blog is up for an award and if you have a moment, I was hoping you could vote for me.  You've all been my inspiration to keep writing and have given me so much confidence, so I owe this nomination to all of you.

My blog is Try Defying Gravity (http://trydefyinggravity.wordpress.com) and the award nomination site is http://www.hartleysboys.com/p/spd-blogger-awards-nomination-form.html.  My blog is listed under the "Inspirational" category.

Voting runs until this Saturday.

Thanks in advance!!

Haven't been by in a while.  Happy New Year, all!  Would you dare stop by a cute doctor's office with no appointment to introduce yourself or try to ask him out on a date?  From the latest installment of my novel on a blog, Veronica's Nap: http://veronicas-nap.com/book/ch-7-3-no-fear-of-ridicule/

Hi, Margot,

As a grandparent I'm always concerned about the message books I read to my grandchildren are sending. One book I reviewed was terrific, with great illustrations, but the authors didn't realize one of the messages that could be taken away was that change was needed to be accepted by other.

On, the flip side, silly pbs are great for their pure entertainment value.

But, I'd sooner purchase the book with a take away value as long as it is also engaging to children.

Flashbacks: I think they can be useful if used sparingly. I think publishers are going to the extreme with cutting prologues and flashbacks, and even helpful description (telling).

Just my opinion.
