Kate, Karen is absolutely right.  Kids have short attention spans, and can get lost if you ramble on.  The idea is to paint vivid word pictures using a few powerful yet evocative words.  Leave the details to the illustrator.  Young children find the pictures tell more of the story.  The pictures, when done by a talented and experienced artist, will draw out the nuances of your story for kids to SEE, before they can read the words themselves. 

It also helps them learn to read, by associating certain parts of the pictures with specific words.  The marriage of a wonderful story, with an equally wonderful artist, is what truly classic picture books are all about.

Kate, Tightening means to reduce your word count - make each word count - use strong verbs and action words, and limit/omit adjectives and adverbs.

Most email services, such as Yahoo, have groups. You can go to their groups page and plug in a keyword for the type of critique group you're looking for.

Also, since your writing about children, you might want to look into the Society of Children's Book Writers and Ilustrators (SCBWI). There's an annual fee, but well worth it. You should be able to find a critique group there.

Angels of Inspiration is an organization promoting page turning self help through my unique childrens book series created to reach out to the younger generation, through inspiration, to empower these young individuals into having strong, confident and positive minds and prepare them for a bright future ahead.

Through Angels of Inspiration I am able to fulfill my passion for helping children as well as give back, to raise funds and aweareness for causes that bennifit children in our community through the sales of our childrens books.

Angels of Inspiration has branched out as Literary Agent, signing new authors to publish their childrens books under my label. This allows us to better create significant synergies so that we can get our message as well as our authors messages out to reach a greater audience.

2011 was a great experience and learning curb and 2012 is going to be even better!

Thanks for the feed back.  This may seem pretty basic but when you say tightening what exactly does that mean?  Is it too wordy?  I am new at this which I suppose is fairly obvious.  I like the idea of a critique group.  Any suggestions as to how to find one?  Thanks for all the help!

Kate, your article certainly has enough "meat' in it for a terrific mid-grade novel. As an article, it needs some tightening of the wordiness and focus.  If you want to write, I suggest you join a good critique group, with advanced members who write for the same age as you. The comments, suggestions and support from such a group will prove invaluable. And reading the MS of others is also a great way to learn.  It takes time, lots or rewrites and experience to become a published author.  Use your blog as a way to practice writing tight and terrific, while keeping your focus on the main theme.  And remember that determination, patience and talent, plus a little luck, is what finally gets you published!!
