Have Ya Heard (HYH) Rise Awards is a virutal event that will be held on March 21, 2011 at http://awards.hyhonline.com/

We are accepting nominations now until February 11.

The HYH Rise Awards gives recognition to individuals and organizations that are making an impact in the special needs community through media, arts and entertainment works.   The arts (i.e. music, dance, and acting) and sports provide many benefits for special needs children and adults – improve motor skills, strengthen cognitive skills, creative expression, boosting self-confidence, and health through movement and exercise.   In addition to the arts, media has played an important role in advocating for special needs children and adults.  The internet has opened windows of opportunity through online radio, videos, magazines and blogging.  Media and entertainment outlets tend to bring individuals from all walks of life together.  Over the years, self-advocates, parents and advocates have launched websites to provide resources to parents, blogs and radio to share their stories giving platforms for to empower the disabled community like never before.   The HYH Rise Awards is our way of saying THANK YOU and to further spread awareness here in the US and abroad!

HYH Rise Awards celebrates inclusion and awareness through the internet, magazine, sports, media, art, film, and books for all special needs (i.e. Down syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Asperger syndrome, and rare conditions). Although, "The Rise Award" is dedicated towards Down syndrome self-advocates; however, self-advocates with any disability can be nominated in all other categories.  The awards are open to the public and there is no cost to participate.

Saw an online video or a film that moved you? Read an inspirational or informative book about or written by someone w/ a disability? Came across a blog or e-magazine dedicated to rising awareness? Is there a sports league in your area for special needs children? Know someone w/ Down syndrome who self-advocates - public speaking, sports, acting, etc.? Give them the recognition they deserve.
