Ok, is it just me or is attitude or the perception of attitude built into teens as soon as they are 13?

My son is 13.  Everything is eye rolling, sighs and slouching even if I want to talk to him.  Simple conversations turn into arguments to get his attention. Sometimes I just don't look at him when we talk so I won't feel I am bothering him.

I do think he is listening because most of the time he follows through with what I ask or said. But, darn, I would really like to know that I am not taking up his precious time---all the time.

Is this normal?  My mom would tell me all the time to drop the attitude yet I don't recall even thinking I had one.
