Wordpress is FREE!!! Either you use the free blog at wordpress.com or you use the free code and host it with a hosting provider. The only cost associated with wordpress is if YOU choose to pay for hosting and additionally your own domain name - both of which are optional.
If someone buys apudiem.com you lose the .com domain name not your wordpress.com name and site.
If you train/teach your readers to come to your wordpress.com site it's not a big deal. I don't know how many readers you have and your PR etc.
What you lose if you let the domain name go is the association of apudiem with YOU. They call it branding or positioning. It would be like owning Ivory soap and having someone else own www.ivory.com and it went to a company that sold children's shoes. Not good if you want to OWN the identity of Ivory soap.
So... you need to decide if you want to "invest" in that singular name or are happy with using the address at wordpress.
Think of it like having a PO Box instead of mail coming to your very own beautiful office in Successville. It may not matter - but that's a decision only you get to make.
I have three blogs on wordpress.com without my own domain names going to them. And it doesn't matter. I haven't invested much of my time or energy in them.
I'm not sure what the $14.95 is for but it's not for wordpress.

Hope this helps.

You sound confused.

When you buy a domain name you are not buying the site (real estate) your site and it's files occupy. Although you can often buy BOTH services from say Yahoo or GoDaddy. They are two separate things. Your actual web site sits on a server somewhere and is identified by a series of numbers - http://1255.125.666.457 for instance (that's a made up number).

So, you can use the wordpress.com name they give you which identifies your site just the way it is - or - you can buy a domain name and set it up to show your site (either as is or masked so no one will see you're on a hosted blog).

For example: if you go to www.winndixie.com you actually go to www.winn-dixie.com and then to www.winndixiegrocerystores.com. Big companies will buy up ALL the variations of their names and forward them them to ONE site (including misspellings of their company name).

So... it's not actually very complicated but just buying a domain name doesn't do anything in and of itself. If you want people to see your site you have forward the domain name or set up the domain name to show your namerservers from your hosting service.

Hope this helps clear up the process.

You can point your domain name to another website or subdomain. If you don't mask it - the browser will show apudiem.wordpress.com, if you forward it and mask it the browser will show www.apudiem.com.
You can set this up through whatever admin panel your domain name registrar uses.

I checked your site out. You've got quite a bit of work done on the site and for the cost of renewing the name ($10 I think on godaddy.com) I'd consider keeping it and forward it with masking.

I do understand how you feel though. I let a couple of domain names go this last year. $10 adds up.

Your site is approximately worth $714 ( http://www.urlappraisal.net/ ) so I don't know if that makes a difference to you or not. You would have to sell the site and the domain name together for that to be of real value. And that doesn't sound like what you want to do.

I've gone to wordpress.com for a personal blog I have just to reduce hosting expense but I did keep the domain name. If you need the money to pay for gas, and food, etc. - then let it go and I'm sure you can get the name or one close to it back.

Hope this helps.

If you are using domain forwarding to send your own domain name to a blogger site - yes, you should keep the domain name.
If you just use the subdomain that blogger gives you as your web address then it doesn't matter.
Domain names that expire can be bought and registered by anyone after you let them go. I inadvertently let my www.juliaward.com expire and it took me three years to get it back. Most top level domain names are now being used so if the name is valuable you should keep it.

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/google-friend-connect-integration/

There's a plugin to use Google Friends. Make sure you have a self hosted web site not a free blog on wordpress.com. And read the requirements to make sure your version of wordpress is supported.

Hi ladies! Question for you.....is there a way to post a GCF link into your sidebars?!? :) Like a widget or something?!? Thanks.

Richelle - Did you figure out the blogroll?
Go to your dashboard and look for Links. There is an "add new" option where you add whoever you want on your blogroll. You can make different categories there also.
After that they should show up in your widget or blogroll page.
