Patricia, I took a quick look at your writing and the stories seem interesting.  However for kids with reading problems, short picture books that are fun but VERY simple usually get their interest.  The illustrations back up the text and help kids remember the words. 500 words tops!!

Their attention span at that age is short anyway, and with ADHD etc it is even shorter. Themes that bring in their interests are also good to use - trucks, horses, dogs, baseball etc.  Use whatever they are keen to do or play with as your simple plot. Short, easy to grasp words and sentences work best.

I would be happy to critique a page of one story if you think that would be helpful.

My grandson is ADHD and developmentally delayed, is way behind on his reading skills.  He is in second grade but reading just barely at a first grade level.  I also wrote a book with short stories that will hopefully help children with reading problems want to read.  It has seemed to work for him.  I want to eventually get it published.  If you want to read some of it, you can at www.writingsbypatricia2011.blogspot.com.  It is called Granny's Stories

Book signings can be fun.  It is always good to meet your readers.

11 books so far Tonya: all for children and most are in rhyme.  My kids had some minor reading problems, so I try to write books that tempt kids to read - especially boys.  One picture book helps kids with dyslexia, and their parents. Another is for kids who are dealing with BIG changes in their lives - both these have helpful parent/teacher guides.

Then I have a rhyming series of eBooks that tell about animals from the US and Australia - I am originally from Australia

My latest is a mid-grade adventure for boys.  It is set on a cattle station in the Aussie outback.  Sure to tempt reluctant readers. You can see them all here, link to a sample page or reviews. :  http://perfectmagiccarpet.blogspot.com/

Hi Ladies!  Do your young kiddos have you laughing with their unique way of looking at the world?  I'm looking for more submissions for The Things Kids Say on Houston Parents Magazine (http://houstonparentsmagazine.com/index.html).  We are a quickly growing online resource for parents in the Houston area (so far we've had over 2800 hits in February).  We currently compensate with a byline and link.  The best way to submit is to email editor@HoustonParentsMagazine.com, though I also check messages here. ;)
