The FREE, yearly,  Muse Online Writing Conference is now taking bookings.

Below is the link to the Muse page that lists the workshops, pitch sessions, agents, publishers and chat sessions being offered throughout the week of October 3rd - 9th.

This is my fifth year of offering a fast assessment of hundreds of first pages.  I hardly have time to breath for the whole week.  However, meeting new writers and helping them on their way is always a thrill for me.
* Will it HOOK an editor's interest.
* Does it include a WOW factor
* Is it tight and terrific - no waffles ?

And many other workshops offer a variety of terrific writing guidance and publisher's advice + a chance to pitch your story to a publisher.  The FREE Muse Online Conference is a once a year chance to find new contacts, network with other writers, and pick the brains of the experts.

A slam dunk - right?

Hello all!!! I hope your week is fabulous so far. My part of Alabama is getting soaked! But it's nice to have a break in the heat. I wanted to share with all of you that my book Friday Lunch is now available for purchase on my publisher's site. The official release date to the general public is set for Nov. 22nd! Here's the link. Come read about the women of Friday Lunch. It's available in eBook format too! I actually had someone read the entire 368 pages in two days! Thanks for letting me brag a little in here. I know you all get how this feels!!!

Congratulations April Nicole for having your empowering story completed.

As for Self Publishing I will answer you and Dawn Odel with the same words:

Never attempt to self publish without first thoroughly researching the many aspects of it before you begin.

A successful self-publisher needs lots of time, money,  boundeless energy to sell and promote their book, + the knowledge of how to go about both the publishing part and then  the promotion that leads to sales.

Join a writing list where some of the members are self published and pick their brains.  Pay to have your book properly edited.  This is the best investment you will ever make. Discover how to dodge the many scam artists who just want your money.   How to set up a book ( or pay someone else) for Kindle and other e-readers.  The right book size, layout and paper to use.  An artist to do your cover.

Learn the art of writing Press Releases, teeing up Virtual Book Tours and real time signings at bookstores and elsewhere,  The right way to contact newspapers, TV and radio.  Spend time on social networks promoting your book.  Find book reviewers.  A website or blog that tells about your book's progress, shows a book trailer, a sample chapter and the great cover art  - not to mention where people can buy it.

3x elements bring success:

#1 - A well written and terrific story - professionally edited.

#2 - The ability to spend the necessary  time,  money and energy.

#3 -  Detailed research that ensues you really know what you are doing.

Dawn and April,  self publishing can work very well if you have a book that has a niche market, and you target that market for all you are worth.  There are two things involved in self publishing successfully:

#1 - Doing you homework about the fine details involved in self publishing, and making sure you get your money's worth and are not ripped off.

#2 - Having the energy, time and money to promote your book successfully.  Doing this successfully takes a huge amount of time and not a little money.  Learning to write tight and terrific Press Releases for TV, Radio and newspaper contacts + bookstores and schools.  Getting bookstores and schools to let you do signings, and talk about your books.  Finding the right markets to target.  Being Social Network savvy, and working Facebook, Google+, Twitter and others to your advantage. And on and on.  Promotion never seems to end.  And it is ALL up to you when you self publish.

Publishing is the easier part.  But a published book that does not sell is no good to you or anyone else.  You have to find your market and then go after it.  I would advise thoroughly researching BOTH the publishing and the promotional side of sellf publishing  before attempting it.  Pick the brains of  online authors who have self -published and been successful at it.

A PDF book needs to be converted into a proper eBook that will go on Kindle and other e-readers.  This takes some knowledge and know-how.  Books that are self published need serious editing,  exactly the same as those published traditionally.  Thinking you can skip past this important last step is what makes so many self published  books poor quality.  No one should try to self-edit their own writing - or have a friend who is not a trained editor do it for them.

Without exception, I have found that writers who successful self publish, are those that took  the time in the beginning to research every detail of both the publishing and the promotion, before they went ahead and did it.

Question: What is your opinion on self publishing vs traditional publishing?
Comment by April Nicole on August 29, 2011 at 9:44am

Ok ladies!! My first book I want to actually put put into the word is ready! :) all safe and sound on my computer.  I was wondering if you ladies use a certain program or just have it on a PDF file to put into a book format.  I was thinking of self publishing and wanted advice on who you all use? Or do you do i on a ebook format with kindle or amazon?

My book is empowering women that have been abused or raped and turning that trauma into a force to change your life for the better! :) It is targeted for women of all ages including teens.  I have been nervous to put it out there because it can be controversial but in a good way. New ways of looking at things.

any advice would be appriciated

thank you
