What historical woman figure inspires you? Take the challenge at Mom's Tree House this month in celebrating Women History Month. We all have a specific era we like, we see them in movies and books, we like a specific type of fashion, or maybe their story alone moves you, I would like you to share.
What an inspiration..."You CAN have it all...just not all at the same time." It is so true that we have the right to go after all that inspires us, and achieving that depends upon adequate prioritization. Thanks for your thoughts on this!
Meagan, I think it is a matter of priorities. It all depends on what YOU, as a writer mother and wife, consider the #1 priority in your life. Seriously ponder what would be the least traumatic of those three to be without. All three are important to many of us, so the secret is to find the right balance between writing and family.
Sometimes you have to suck it up and put family first. Other times you can negotiate (bribery works too) a way to get to that writing conference without first having to file for divorce. Getting up earlier to write also works. What writer needs 8 hours of sleep anyway???
Then look at the choices you make and the compromises you agree to over a yearly time frame. If you are winning this family versus writing career war, your yearly balance sheet should come out pretty even: 50-50.
If the odds favor one side a huge amount, decide if you want to make a change. If the off-balance favors your writing, make sure you are prepared to face the consequences of this. If it favors your family, make sure you are happy with this. If not, look for more compromises and much better bribes for husband and kids.
I know when I began serious writing I had to decide what was most important, my kids and my husband, or my writing. Family won hands down. So husband and I worked out some compromises that have worked well through the years. It is not perfect, but we have been happily married for almost 40 years now, and I have 11 books published, and more to come. None of our kids have Mommy Dearest trauma!!
You CAN have it all - just not all at the one time. And a happy family cheering you on is a wonderful bonus. SECRET: Going to bed together keeps marriages warm and fuzzy. Hey, you can always sneak out later if the Muse calls, or his snoring reaches umpteen decibels.

Do you think it is possible for moms to redefine themselves without sacrificing their children or their marriages? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this one.
