2010 Is an Ideas Year

By Jennifer James, Founder

It feels a lot like 2007. Three years ago marked the time when the vast majority of the mom blogging community shifted from personal blogging to a hybrid between personal blogging and reviewing products. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it’s time for innovative ideas again.

Great ideas are difficult to come by because we are limited by what we can do on the platforms we use most, from blogs to social networks to smart phones. Although new ideas may be difficult to come by, that certainly does not mean they're impossible to think up.

My prediction for 2010: The moms who spend the most time...

— thinking up new ideas that are outside the box

— tinkering with these ideas to perfection

— using their ideas across social media and mobile platforms and

— partnering with other moms and/or corporations to everyone’s benefit

... will be the most successful in 2010.

What do you think? Am I right on target, or am I all wrong in my assessment? And, I must say, new ideas don't have to be lofty ones. They can simply be tweaks to what you and all of us already do.

I believe we’re all looking for the next big idea that makes moms stop and think, “Wow, this is a really great concept and I love its execution.”

I spend a lot of my time thinking up new ideas and new ways to communicate. I personally am invigorated by the process of creating something new to share with our community. There are a lot of ideas to be launched in 2010 and I am anxiously anticipating watching them unfold.

In all honesty, I haven't really seen the new trends and ideas leap forward yet in the mom blogging community. Have you seen any new ideas in the mom blogging community yet? Are you starting anything new?

I believe that giveaways and contests will be even a bigger thing in 2010 than it was in the past. Continuing to come up with new angles is the key. Staying positive and engaging other women bloggers to cross promote.

I love blogging and have heard a lot about the influence of mommy bloggers in corporate America. I now work part time for a local newspaper and because of some of my blogging experience it has led me into website development. I am hoping to establish an online blog for our newspaper! Ah, to blog and get paid for it!

For the moment, my blog has become a journal on motherhood, my music ministry and marriage. But I do book reviews and giveaways too. I feel like I'm all over the place and need to refocus on one particular area!

I'm all in for new ideas for 2010! Thanks!

Thanks Guys! I'm enjoying reading all of your thoughts too. I've done giveaways - my last one had 100 entrants yet I didn't see a "permanent" boost in numbers - so for my site it didn't work that well. But I know it works for others.

I agree with Denny - guest blogging definately works. It has worked for me. Maybe we should do more guest blogging exchanges or something. :-)

Also, participating in McLinky's has worked for me. I participated in one today - a mommy blogger is doing a link up on parenting. So I wrote a post on "my mom my role model" today and linked up to this other girls McLinky and am getting extra hits - it works!

Courtney, I like what you've done with your Living Well message board!

Great suggestion, Courtney!

I've only been blogging since 10/08 & last spring I started posting weekly artist features, giveaways & "studio tours". I've noticed that several other art-heavy blogs are now doing the same.
I think this trend will continue - the features cost nothing & you get exposure to a new group of readers

I read something that had three word business advice. One of the three word phrases were have no partners. I did not like that phrase. I enjoyed hearing your prediction of partnering for 2010. Thanks!

Have not been at this for very long but have found guest blogging and commenting on others blogs does increase traffic and its free!! I have put the word out to others in the field of parenting and law of attraction that I am interested in subscribing to their blogs ...I follow them and comment frequently.Seems to be a win-win.

Very neat. I love the idea of a message board!

For me - interacting with my readers is so key - but also DAUNTING. My email inbox got to a point where I just could not keep up with it - most emails were specifically marriage questions (I was on the Rachael Ray Show on a segment about 50's wives). So I started a message board new here in 2010 and it's working!!!! I have 133 women registered and it's only been up for 3 weeks - woohoo!!!

Nabble provides this board for free - if you want to check it out and copy this idea - go for it. My thread topics are marriage, parenting, homemaking and health. All of these are Bible based discussions. But you could go so many different ways with a message board. You could do one to discuss saving money, decorating tips, health and beauty, and so much more!

My goal is to get women asking each other questions rather than emailing me all of their questions :-) thus eliminating some of my overflowing email inbox woes :-)!!!!

Check out the message board here:

I think you are right on the money! I have a hybrid blog LOL and I am alway looking for new fresh ideas. It just a creative process and its hard to know what people want to see/read.

Great predictions Jennifer! I think thinking outside the box a bit definitely because companies are looking for something new by now.

Since I am new to blogging I really didn't know how much went into this! I am completely obsessed with the blogging world now. I am not using my blog to make money, but do have a little excitement when I have new readers and followers. But am not really in the market to do ads or be too creative. I really just blog about my life having a son with Autism.

All that being said, I think you are right on the money! To gain those extra followers and get your blog out there it is going to take a lot of creativity and something new in 2010! So many of us moms have blogs and if we want some recognition we will have to stand apart from the pack. Me, well I am pretty happy just posting my thoughts, vents, and celebrations and making new friends. Oh, and being a support for other moms of kids with special needs or suspected kids with special needs.
