Hey Brianne, I saw your question on running mommies and thought I would jump in. I've run in the past, even did a triathlon but have never been particularly "good" runner with distance, etc...I'd heard of the Couch to 5K (C25K) program and decided to give it a try. I'm finishing up week 4 today. Basically you do an interval run 3 times a week and each week you progress and by week 9 you should be able to run 5K in about 30 minutes. The idea is that you won't get injured or burn out from running all the time or too fast right off the bat. I'm hardly a couch potato so finding it pretty good, but confident in the fact that I am working on my time and readjusting muscles to running.
If it sounds like you'd like to give it a go, there is more info on the Cool Running website and I can even point you in the direction of some free podcasts that will cue you on when you should run and when you should walk and she has created a great music track. There is also a great fan club on Facebook that are very supportive and you can then progress to the next system that works you up to 8K.
