I Really Do Love My Husband, but Sometimes He’s Just an Idiot

My husband is a pretty bright guy. He nearly pulled a 4.0 getting his MBA, he’s pretty knowledgeable on world finances, political issues, economics, blah blah blah, and he’s the only person who managed to finally explain the game of football to me so that I could actually understand it.But other times he’s just an idiot. Like when he asked me if I really needed cream cheese on my bagel when I was eight months and 50 pounds pregnant. And when he asks me “What’s going on here??” while staring…See More

Oh We’re Going Out to Dinner… Even if it’s Pouring Rain!

Last Sunday, Mags asked the girls if they wanted to go for ice cream after dinner. Of course, Pip, never one to turn down an excuse to ride her bike/scooter or ice cream, said yes immediately. Besides, since we’ll be walking to school most days this coming year, she said she wanted to get used to riding with her brand-new-backpack.So as soon as she finished her last bite, she grabbed her brand-new-backpack and her scooter and was ready for her first test-run… oh, and ice cream. Quite honestly,…See More

A Quest For The Perfect Backpack

Maybe it’s a prelude to choosing a dress for prom. Maybe it’s a right of passage we are just now finding out about. Maybe it’s just our own, quirky kid.Whatever it is, we went into Target on Sunday and spent over an hour picking out The Perfect Backpack. An hour. In backpack aisle.Once there, Pip was suddenly overwhelmed with choices. I wondered if she was also thinking about her new classroom in her new school filled with new kids. All of whom will have new backpacks and lunchboxes. I wondered…See More

Doctor Oz Is Off My List

Sometime in mid-June I saw a Dr. Oz show on “silent killers”. It was a month after I had made the appointment to see my own-new doctor and two months before the appointment was scheduled to occur. I don’t usually watch this show, but I went through a two-week-long phase in which I thought it might be a good idea to tape it and watch it when I could. Because I like Dr. Oz. At least I liked him on Oprah. It turns out that I don’t like him so much on his own and I’m beginning to think that the…See More

Even the Best Girl Rester Has her Off-Days

This morning Bean came downstairs and asked if she could paint. “Of course,” I answered. Moments later, Pip came down and joined her.A little later on, Pip came into the kitchen where I was making breakfast and told me she had a headache. This isn’t uncommon. Pip tends to get headaches every now and then, especially when she’s tired. And since the good kind of jetlag, the kind you get when you come back from California in the summer and sleep in until well past 9:00 every morning, has worn off,…See More

"Ha!! Definitely rude! It's definitely split.... we lived in the North, so more women worked in that area, but many parts are more traditional. His wife did work, of course! ;)"

"Oh my goodness...RUDE! Dumb question, but do most Italian women work outside the home? I mean obviously his poor wife probably holds three jobs."

So... When are You Going Back to Work?

About two years ago, when we were living in Italy, we were at an end-of-the-year picnic with Pip’s school. I found myself talking a father of one of her classmates, who spoke English quite well.Of course, we weren’t long into the conversation before he asked, “So… what do you do?”Me: I’m a stay-at-home mom.Him: You mean, you don’t work at all?Maybe he doesn’t understand English as well as he speaks it. I tried again…Me: I stay at home with my daughters. That’s my job.(I consider telling him…See More

Menopause Is Making My Kids Cold

So I imagine myself walking into a Menopause Support Group (which I’m sure don’t exist, so I might have to be the founder)…“I’m Heather. I’m 36 and I’m going through menopause.”Hi HeatherAnd no one would say anything like, “What did you just say??” or “I think you might be dying” or “I’m 42 and I’m pregnant for the first time” or “Whoa… dude… you need to see a doctor. Like now.” Because they’d all be freaks like me. And we could go on to commiserate about how freaking hot it is to be having a…See More

My Tree Thinks I'm Charlie Brown

When Mags and I got married, everyone took home their own, little pot of ivy. If my kids had been there, they would have asked if it was poison ivy. It wasn’t. It was the green, viney kind that grows on everything. Except in the pot we took home. This stuff grows on trees, it takes over yards, it grows healthily on buildings made of bricks and cement. But it did not grow in nice, rich soil in the pretty, little pot in our first condo. I don’t think it lasted two full months.Maybe it was the…See More

Little Miss Independent and Baby Huey

So by now, if you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, you know that we have two daughters, sired and born to the same parents. They share the same gene pool and the same bed. And while they don’t look that much alike, they do look like sisters and have the same Nordic-white hair. But the similarities might end there (with the exceptions of a mutual love of Barbies, raspberries, and each other). So we have this one child, Pip, who wants complete autonomy and total independence. She…See More

Thank you for your interest in the free online writing class for women. Unfortunately registration is now closed. But since there was such a nice turn out I will be offering more writing classes in the very near future (the first course is only a month long, so the next one should start before the end of the year). To make sure you're kept int he loop the next time classes begin Join Mommy Writers online.
