Meredith Riley replied to Cynthia's discussion 'why would you use an alias for your child?'
"Actually, I think the fear is overblown. Online predators are rare. The ones most likely to hurt your child are hanging around the playground and can hear you call out your child's name. As for privacy, first names are a dime a dozen. Unless…"

Do You Want to Sponsor a Podcast Episode for Only $15?

I have a podcast and blog called (Over)Thinking Mom over at http://overthinkingmom.com. After a business contacted me for a one episode sponsorship, I've decided to allow occasional weekly episode sponsors to help pay for the cost of producing the show (not for profit). Podcast sponsorship is a great way to get word out about your blog or home business because all you need to do is write some copy that I can read at the beginning or end…See More

Podcast Episode: The Not So Evil Stepmom

We are all familiar with cultural images of the evil step-mother, the step-mother who tries to steal away a father’s affections from his children, who is a gold digger, who lacks any maternal gene. But how accurate is this trope? Unsurprisingly, not that accurate. I talk with Ashley-Michelle, step-mother to a 2 year old son and biological mother to a five month old daughter. She talks about her relationship with the biological mother of her son, her role in her stepson’s life, the most…See More

Stupid is as Stupid Tweets

I’m sure most of you are familiar with the horrible attack on the reporter Lara Logan in Egypt last week. In case you missed this news, a quick recap: Logan, a 39 year old mother of two and seasoned reporter, was in Cairo reporting on the latest uprisings. She was reporting for the show 60 Minutes and had a camera crew with her. At one point, while separated from her crew and security, she was surrounded by a group of Egyptian men who beat and sexually assaulted her for 20 or 30 minutes. A…See More

Modern Day Wet Nursing: Weird or Wonderful?

Wet nurses have been around to feed other women’s babies since women started having babies, but in the last few generations wet nurses have fallen out of favor, mostly because of the introduction of formula, among other reasons. In 2007 a small series of articles noted a new minor reemergence of wet nursing, often in the form of cross nursing, when two or more women feed each others’ baby in a child care arrangement.  In 2009, while on a humanitarian mission to Sierra Leone, Salma Hayek made…See More

Childcare and the Working Mom [Episode 19]

According to some statistics, as many as 70% of moms work outside of the home, whether full time or part time. Nearly 30% of babies with working moms use daycare specifically. Not all statistics are full proof, and I’m not sure I’d go around quoting those numbers as absolute fact, but they do mean child care is a big issue for American moms.I stay at home with my daughter, so I am the opposite of an authority on this topic. Therefore, I talk with Lindsay, a working mother of one with another on…See More

Are Women Giving Birth Too Early for Convenience?

While browsing through The Sacramento Bee, my parents' daily paper (yes, they still get a paper delivered to them), I came across the headline "Health officials urge women not to deliver babies early for convenience." That's a good urge, as far as urges go. However, this article left me confused.…See More

Mommy Blogger Spotlight Round-Up

I've highlighted a total of eight blogs in my mommy blogger spotlight so far, but I haven't talked about them in an actual post. I'll use this week's "Newsroom" post to provide a round-up of these blogs. Although the term "Mommy Blogger" is not without its controversy, I've stuck with it in a co-opting the enemy's phrase kind of way (in other words, I'm sick of the term as a slight and want to use it as a compliment). If the term "Mommy Blogger" offends you, pretend like its a "Moms who write…See More

Podcast Episode: Your Post Baby Marriage

For many years I have heard the warning that babies ruin marriages, andthose issuing this warning often have years long studies backing uptheir claims. Since Dave and I got pregnant less than two months aftergetting married, I spent much of my pregnancy wondering if Amelia’sarrival would kill the romance. Guess what? It did, but does lessromance correlate with a weak marriage? Does marital happiness alwaysdecrease post baby?…See More

Is That a Real Baby?

A couple weeks ago my grandmother broke her collarbone while trying to climb over a fence after she locked herself out of the yard when my dad was at Home Depot (she lived in the house on the same lot, across the pool). My dad found her with a bruised face and a dazed look, broken flower pots and a missing collarbone the only evidence of the accident; my grandmother had no idea what happened and still has no idea. She is demented. Literally.Because the combination of dementia and her naturally…See More

My Traffic Fantasy

Los Angeles traffic makes my husband's head explode, especially LA traffic at 3pm on a Friday when 400 highway miles still remain of the journey. I don't share Dave's sentiment. I'm surprisingly zen about stop and go two hours to travel twenty miles situations if, and this is a big IF, I am alone, listening to music or podcasts, safely cocooned in my Honda hideaway. However, LA…See More

Podcast Episode: Bad Mother, A History of Mothering Manuals

The Introduction to Dr. William Sears’ and Martha Sears’ 2003 edition of The Baby Book warns mothers, “Beware of Baby Trainers.” They do not warn “Beware of Parenting Books” (because if they did their massive book would becomeobsolete). Should we be wary of parenting books? I’m not the one toask; I read entirely too many. Perhaps, instead of avoiding thesemanuals, we should put them in context.I look at…See More

My blogging philosophy? I don't have a philosophy or a pedagogy, but I do believe blogs are powerful community builders as well as fun and informative outlets for people who love words.
