The morning after the great Chicago fire, a group of merchants stood on State Street, looking at the smoking remains of what had been their retail stores. They went into a conference to decide if they would try to rebuild their businesses or leave Chicago and start over in a more promising section of the country. When they finally reached a decision, all of them – except one – decided to leave Chicago.
The merchant who decided to stay and rebuild pointed a finger at the charred remains of his store, and boldly stated, "Gentlemen, on that very spot I will build the world's greatest store, no matter how many times it may burn down." That merchant was Marshall Field.
The store was built. It still stands there today, almost one hundred and forty years later, a towering monument to the power of that state of mind we call "burning desire".
All great successes ultimately begin with a goal, but what makes goals a reality is the fuel of human desire. Setting a goal can give you a temporary feeling of inspiration, but burning desire is what gets you through all the perspiration necessary to overcome the inevitable obstacles along the way.
Take a moment to think about the goals you've set for yourself. How committed are you to achieving these goals? Do you have a "burning desire" to accomplish them? If not, there are a few steps you can take to cultivate this powerful tool.
Take immediate action.
Once you set a goal for yourself, act immediately. Too often people get "stuck" and never reach the action stage. You can develop your plan later, but get moving first. Just identify the very first physical action you need to take, and then DO IT.
Fill your environment with desire boosters.
Let's say one of your goals is to qualify for the next Silver/Gold Destinations trip. Great! Get some poster board, and make some signs that say, "I have EARNED the Destinations trip" and put them up around your house. Or get some magazines, cut out pictures of sandy beaches, palm trees and a beautiful cruise ship and post them where you will see them every day. This type of positive reinforcement will help fuel your desire to accomplish your goal.
Surround yourself with positive people.
Make friends with people who will encourage you on the path to your goals, and find ways to spend more time with them. Talk to Managers and other IBOs who have earned Destinations trips in the past. Share your goals with people who will support you, not those who will respond with cynicism or indifference. Their positive energy will spur you on to success.
If you apply these strategies, you'll add so much fuel to your desire that the fire will never burn out. You'll move towards your goals like a guided missile to its target, and you'll enjoy the process because you'll be so focused on the positive rewards instead of the difficulty of the tasks. You will have harnessed a burning desire that will make your dreams come true!
