Japenese Tips for Tidying Up

I've spent the last week cleaning and clearing out things from both my home and my storage.  Inspired by a book I read about "tidying up" and how we cling to things we don't need for reasons hard to explain, but possible to overcome, I set out to create a home environment in which I wasn't constantly having to clean clutter every single day.The book is a bestseller all over the world, but was just recently released in the US and I was lucky enough to get a free, advanced copy.  At first I was…See More

National Geographic Almanac a Great Way to Have Fun this Summer!

I'd heard that National Geographic has a new almanac out and that they are having someone come to schools and use the almanac for a game where the kids do a Jeopardy-type set up and answer questions.  That made me think that this would be easy to do at home as well. It's so hard to convince kids to want to learn while they're on summer vacation, but if you make it a game and turn it into a type of competition for fun, everyone wins! Here is the video about the almanac that shows how you can use…See More

Book Review for After the Fall by Patricia Gussin

Posted on February 16, 2015 at 12:40pm 0 Comments

It’s not long before the first murder and you know exactly who is behind it. It’s not really a mystery, though the main character has some history she’s afraid to reveal that remains a mystery for a while and that was good. This is a thriller, filled with suspense and realistic characters. The author is a family physician and the book reflects a deep knowledge of the medical field. You feel that the medical details could have leapt right off any medical chart it’s so real and exact. I…

But the dominos have been put in place. A madman…

Book Review for: Shadow of the Hawk by K.S. Jones

Posted on February 11, 2015 at 2:39pm 0 Comments

My initial reaction as I began to read Shadow of the Hawk was that the writing was fluid and graceful. The feel, mood and era all reminded me of John Steinbeck and I was hooked from the very start.

Sooze is a 16 year old girl growing up in the Great Depression. She has agreed to marry a man she does not love in order to save her family. She is mature for her age and you immediately feel for her. Her character is equal parts young lady and woman and the author does such…
