Turn your great room into a classroom

When my girls were pint-sized, I couldn't stand the thought of sending them to a pre-school each day that was barely meeting their needs, yet eating up my entire paycheck.  I literally stayed up countless sleepless nights wondering how I would fix this problem-- until one night I came up with a solution. I hired a fantastic teacher to come into our house to do educational hands-on activities with our girls.  This came at a small cost at first, and then we added a couple of other families into…See More

A Common Conundrum for Parents: Childcare Expenses that Drain your Pocketbook

http://www.meritworld.com/I can empathize with new parents when they talk about the seemingly-impossible task of finding great schooling that doesn’t break the bank.  Sending your preschooler off is hard enough emotionally, and becomes even more challenging when factor in your requirements: you want it to be a stimulating, educational, and reliable start and a comfortable place for your kids to be while you are at work.  For most options,…See More

Help your child get into college: Have them DO A PROJECT!

These days, college admissions are more competitive than ever.  Students with a 4.0 are getting turned down at their top choices even though on paper it appears they've done everything "right."  So what are they lacking?  It's not just the GPA that the Admissions Office looks at.  They want to see how your child is different...what can they contribute that other applicants cannot?  Will they attract positive attention to the college?  All of my students have the opportunity to…See More

Win Scholarships and Get Into Your Dream School!

Thanks to budget cuts, California’s higher education system is going through tough times, and students from across the state are feeling the strain. We’ve already gone over the fact that the UC’s are now admitting a lower percentage of residents, which means that their ever-higher admissions standards are only getting more so for Californians. It’s becoming harder and harder to stand out. These days, with the abundance of AP and Honors classes offered at many high schools, a 3.6 GPA or even a…See More

The Curious Case of Babymoons

It used to be that a “babymoon” referred to the period of time that parents spent bonding with a newborn baby, but in recent years, people have instead been using it to describe a vacation that expectant parents take before the baby arrives. Whether it’s Natalie Portman or French First Lady Carla Bruni, the recent uptick in celebrity babymoons has been making more and more Americans aware of this phenomenon. The implication behind it, of course, is that once your baby arrives, life as you know…See More

What to do About "Boomerang" College Graduates?

Summer has traditionally been a time of pride and optimism for new college graduates and their parents. But these days, when college seems less like a gateway to a bright and lucrative future and more like a temporary break from living at home, graduation can be a somewhat anticlimactic experience.Even amidst signs that the job market for recent grads is improving, unemployment for people in their early 20’s still stands at almost 15%. Faced with such discouraging prospects, as many as 80% of…See More

Are My Kids Entitled?

It’s a question that almost every American parent has asked themselves, in some fashion, at some point. Indeed, it’s the question that drove me to write my book in the first place. While you’ll likely have a hard time coming up with a simple answer to that question (I certainly did), you probably have a nagging feeling in your gut that your child is, at least in some ways, entitled. After all, entitlement is a hallmark of life in a relatively affluent society like ours. Even if you’ve managed…See More

"You are so right on target.  It drives me crazy when high school kids have much much nicer cars than their parents(pardon the pun).   And the children don't even realize there's something wrong with the picture."

Entitled children

After a long week of working with teens, I've decided to write a book about America's entitled children.  I don't plan to degrade our youth but I hope to bring awareness that we (all of us who strive to give to our children what we didn't receive as children ourselves) need to get our children involved in the family, neighborhood, community, and society.  Rather than giving our children material goods, we should be guiding them to want more than material things -- the exhilarating feeling you…See More

Share a little something about yourself with other moms.
In 1984, I became pregnant with my first daughter Nicole. After the initial excitement, I became overwhelmed about the prospect of sending my daughter to the terrible public schools in our district, which had just had their budgets cut. Being an educator myself, I was in contact with some of the teachers. I knew how bad the textbooks were, how large the classes were, and how incoherent the curriculum was. Even though she wasn’t born yet, I was worried about how my daughter was to be educated.

Now I am the Director at Merit Educational Consultants. Merit is a college Advisory looking to connect with parents that want to get their kids into selective colleges. Merit offers services such as test prep, 4 year plans, interview skills, personal statements, resume building, appeal letters, and ProjectMERIT. ProjectMERIT is a program where students use real world skills to develop a project that benefits the community. I also run a K-12 program that focuses on one-to-one teaching.

The Wisdom of Letting Kids Fail

Posted on June 29, 2011 at 3:56pm 0 Comments

I think that many Americans have known for a long time that indulgent, Helicopter-style parenting leads to entitled children. Of course, when it’s spelled out that way, the truth seems implicit and obvious, but it’s a truth that’s been lost on a generation of middle class parents who only wanted their children to avoid all of the discomforts that they experienced, and to have all of the advantages that they never had. While that sentiment is certainly one that anyone can empathize with, it…
