For longer than I care to mention, I have worked as a perinatal nurse in San Francisco. However, pregnancy care is my passion, not just my career. I have a funny, awe-inspiring, inquisitive son, Alexander, who never ceases to bring a smile to my face. Last year, I published my first book, The Joy of Pregnancy, with the Harvard Common Press.
What is your blogging philosophy?
Honest, passionate, and entertaining (hopefully!). I'm just learning how to steady my legs in the blogging world, but really enjoy the connections I'm making and the information it's opening me up to! Building a community on the Internet is so important-- it's a place of support and guidance. Hopefully, that's what I'm adding to!

Also, my blog is my own. It's becoming part of how I express myself-- and while I'll let my publisher sometimes manage my online profiles (just being honest with you here!), my blog is entirely my own (and I like that because then I'm not feeling the constraints of an editor or style sheet!).
I have been blogging since...

Internet Connectivity

Posted on July 13, 2009 at 10:30am 0 Comments

Argh – I have been offline intermittently for the past 2 weeks. My family and I are in South Haven Michigan on Lake Michigan for several weeks. Until this summer we had only dial-up Internet, which was simply torture. Although we are on the lakefront and near a good size community, our immediate area is very rural. It takes 10 minutes off the main road onto a windy dirt road to get all the way out to us.

In years past we had no phone machine, no fax machine and minimal connectivity,… Continue

Last week every major newspaper reported that New York has become the first state to allow taxpayer-funded researchers to pay women for giving their eggs for embryonic stem cell research. In the recent governmental shift of supporting embryonic stem cell research this is a development welcomed by scientistists world-wide. However, it has received harsh criticism by… Continue

The Madonna Phenomenon... no, not that Madonna

Looking through women’s magazines and news articles about celebrity moms, you might conclude that new mothers are treated like royalty, or at least the mothers of royalty. By these accounts, new mothers glow, parents and in-laws dote, partners are awed, and girlfriends constantly stream in to help with the house, the kids, and the shopping. But does it really happen? Ask your mom or grandmother what things were like when she had her babies. Was she treated like a queen? How was it for your… Continue

Rewards of Motherhood: A Mother's Day Edition

Posted on May 4, 2009 at 11:56am 0 Comments

As it’s getting closer to Mother’s Day I am doing a lot of thinking about motherhood. Just as with the stages of pregnancy, it changes and shifts as we move through each new stage and phase of our fetus/infant/toddler/child/tween/teenager… ah heck, baby’s life.

I have recently come across two books on that echo my own parenting style: Rattled! by Christine Coppa and Bad Mother by Ayelet Waldman. They are both written by witty, honest women who openly share the full… Continue
