College Grads Asking: Is It's Worth It?

I went to visit the College of Charleston last weekend with my daughter and met a nice kid who recently moved to the area from the Northeast.  A job opportunity brought him there which led us to a conversation on colleges. He's a recent graduate from James Madison University and is $50,000 in debt.  His story is like a lot of kids' and they are questioning whether going to college is really worth it? According to the Project on Student Debt, the average debt carried by college grads…

Low Entry Giveaway: Money Savvy Pig

Money Savvy Pig

Money Savvy Pig

Growing up, money was kind of a taboo topic in my household. We didn’t really talk about money at all to be honest. I have a vague recollection of an allowance, but I’m not sure if it was just given to me to spend or if I was encouraged to save? Either way, my husband and I have known from pretty early on that we wanted to be really open with our kids about money. You might recall a few months…

Mrs. Judgy McJudgerson at the Mall

That cute face is why I got into a fight at the mall. And yes, as his shirt indicates, he was actually “dipped in handsome sauce”.

I took my three youngest kids for lunch at the food court in the local mall the other day. My toddler had a meltdown and was doing the high-pitched…

7 Questions New Mom's Should Ask Themselves before Returning to School.

This guest post was written by Kellen Thompson who has also written at length about receiving accounting degrees online as well as enrolling in online classes.

When I was seven months pregnant, I graduated with my Master's degree. At the time, I thought that if I was blessed to stay home with my baby even for a short time while my husband worked, a Master's degree would benefit me when I re-entered the workforce. My employer was also… Continue

Tilting at Windmills

The hardest thing about being a parent of special needs children is…

Wow, I can’t tell you what the hardest thing is because it keeps changing. When it was just Elliott with her RAD, there was a small chance I could keep all the balls in the air. I had a fairly good handle on her current issues and how she was handling them. She has made great progress over the last 10 months, but she still has her moments.

The Oscars 2011: Top Ten Red Carpet Looks

The Oscars. An event synonymous with glamor, beauty, and elegance. We watch it to feel for a moment that we are part of that upper echelon of beautiful people, to dream for a night that we could wear a couture dress and float down the red carpet to the adoring cheers and flashing bulbs that tell us that we have made it, we are a true star...

Unfortunately for 99% of us, we will only ever watch this event on tv, and the most expensive dress we will ever wear will be our wedding dress.… Continue

Life in the Old Walls

This big old house is once more being put to the test as we have now started work on a new bathroom. Slowly but surely, I've been going through the place, renovating rooms and bringing back to life the ancient walls that once embraced a Georgian atmosphere.

White Poison

When we are home I do not feed my children any white bread, flour, pasta, or rice. Since there is little nutritional value in enriched products, (it is enriched because everything nutritional was stripped then vitamins were added) I fail to see the point in feeding it to my family. I strive on giving them the finest whole grain organic fresh ingredients. Considering I don’t feed my family the above-mentioned food, why would I feed white rice cereal to my baby? I didn’t feed Baby Girl #1…

MY KINDA CRAPPY DAY

I started today too early, arising at 4:57am & it seemed to go downhill from there. Lost my patience with myself, lost my cool with my kids, screwed up a new crock-pot dinner, yada, yada, yada.  So what is the success-formula for starting your day off wrong?  'Cause we don't get do-over's. And then we try to make-up to those we afflicted with pithy statements like, "I'm sorry I'm just having a bad day" Puh-lease!  I'm wracking my brain wondering what…
