High Aspirations

Amy has started having riding lessons again. The beauty above is a 16.2hh gelding and he's absolutely gorgeous. I've been taking her twice a week to a local stables that really seems to be helping her. She was cantering and jumping the other day whilst I nervously looked on. I always remember wanting to canter and even gallop along a beach one day, and I can see Amy doing just that eventually. She's living the life I would have loved to live as a child.

And doggone it...

To whom it may concern,

I know this is probably tacky and inappropriate, but I'm having one of those weeks (which, if I gave you the details for, you would sit down and eat this box of caramel filled chocolate covered toffee dusted marshmallows with me- yeah, you read that right).

I'm nominating myself.

Why?  Why would I do that?

Because I'm freakin' awesome, that's why.  Because I have weeks like THIS week, and instead of eating the whole box of… Continue

Life with a Porpoise

When I was a little girl, I used to get words confused which made for some pretty interesting thoughts and ideas which would lead (eventually) to some profound 'a-ha' moments. I'll give you a few examples. There was a warehouse on Highway 83 in McAllen, Texas that had a sign bearing the name "Bull Parts." For many years, I grew quite disturbed when we passed it because it made me shudder, imagining all…

Taking one long, last breath of summer

I was walking the dog past the subdivision clubhouse this morning when I noticed the deck chairs were gone. The pool had been drained and covered by a tarp.

I felt a sudden, immediate stab of sadness. I shouldn't have, of course. It's September. Summer is over. But ... September? How did that happen? How did summer slip away so fast?

I know, I know, it's cliche. It's just that at the beginning of spring, you feel like you have so much time. Winter has just ended, and summer is…

Pig of the Month BBQ

When Anne-Marie’s family and mine got together in Chicago earlier this summer, Pig of the Month offered to supply us with an evening of BBQ bliss. Bliss it was!  The ribs arrived already cooked and frozen. We simply defrosted them overnight in the fridge. The next day we set the table and…

Stance Socks - For the Men in Your Life

I have both a son and a daughter (Lucky me. One of each and I was done!). Needless to say that my daughter has always been – way – more fun to shop for than my son. Boys’ clothing is so predictable and… boring. My son has always enjoyed “clowning around” with his personal style. In his early teen years he was trying hard to discover and differentiate his own fashion style from the same-same sea of cargo shorts, board shoes and logo’d tees. Whether it was to wear a neon pink striped beanie,…

A Birth & Heart Story

This is a very heartfelt, personal birth story of my son, Joshua.  Not for the faint of heart. http://bit.ly/r3h18O

Best Job Ever

Aside from blogging, I also do occasional articles for our hyperlocal online newspaper, TheAlternativePress.com.  My latest assignment was to interview my neighbor, Wade Burch, who just won Round 1 of Food Network's "Chopped Champions."

I came home yesterday from spending the day at the beach with my three kids, fed them dinner, and put them to bed.  Wade called to do the phone interview around 10pm and I wrote my piece last night in a quiet house.  How cool is it that we get to do…

Vegan Chocolate Milkshake

My daughter recently asked me for a milkshake. With her severe allergies to dairy, I knew I would have to come up with a clever alternative. Rather than turning to Google, we came up with our own concoction and I must admit, it's delicious!

Clean Towels Really Shouldn’t Be a Passion

I realize that I haven’t written much lately, and maybe that’s because I just haven’t felt passionate about much over the past few days. Sure, school started, along with all of the crazy that accompanies those first few days, but I managed to get through it without too many tantrums (by me, that is). Life has fallen into a new routine, which is really the old routine –the sequel. Slowly, I have come to accept that I have crossed summer’s finish line, and entered the Fall zone without too…

The Ken Necklace

To some people, this necklace might look like something the Malibu Barbie serial killer would wear.  But to MY group of friends?  Well, this fine piece of craftsmanship is something to be treasured -- at least until you anonymously pass it along to the next unsuspecting girl.

It all started last year when it was used as a prop in a very creative…
