Amy has started having riding lessons again. The beauty above is a 16.2hh gelding and he's absolutely gorgeous. I've been taking her twice a week to a local stables that really seems to be helping her. She was cantering and jumping the other day whilst I nervously looked on. I always remember wanting to canter and even gallop along a beach one day, and I can see Amy doing just that eventually. She's living the life I would have loved to live as a child.

When I was a little girl, I used to get words confused which made for some pretty interesting thoughts and ideas which would lead (eventually) to some profound 'a-ha' moments. I'll give you a few examples. There was a warehouse on Highway 83 in McAllen, Texas that had a sign bearing the name "Bull Parts." For many years, I grew quite disturbed when we passed it because it made me shudder, imagining all…Continue

I was walking the dog past the subdivision clubhouse this morning when I noticed the deck chairs were gone. The pool had been drained and covered by a tarp.
I felt a sudden, immediate stab of sadness. I shouldn't have, of course. It's September. Summer is over. But ... September? How did that happen? How did summer slip away so fast?
I know, I know, it's cliche. It's just that at the beginning of spring, you feel like you have so much time. Winter has just ended, and summer is…

When Anne-Marie’s family and mine got together in Chicago earlier this summer, Pig of the Month offered to supply us with an evening of BBQ bliss. Bliss it was! The ribs arrived already cooked and frozen. We simply defrosted them overnight in the fridge. The next day we set the table and…Continue

I have both a son and a daughter (Lucky me. One of each and I was done!). Needless to say that my daughter has always been – way – more fun to shop for than my son. Boys’ clothing is so predictable and… boring. My son has always enjoyed “clowning around” with his personal style. In his early teen years he was trying hard to discover and differentiate his own fashion style from the same-same sea of cargo shorts, board shoes and logo’d tees. Whether it was to wear a neon pink striped beanie,…Continue

Aside from blogging, I also do occasional articles for our hyperlocal online newspaper, TheAlternativePress.com. My latest assignment was to interview my neighbor, Wade Burch, who just won Round 1 of Food Network's "Chopped Champions."
I came home yesterday from spending the day at the beach with my three kids, fed them dinner, and put them to bed. Wade called to do the phone interview around 10pm and I wrote my piece last night in a quiet house. How cool is it that we get to do…Continue

My daughter recently asked me for a milkshake. With her severe allergies to dairy, I knew I would have to come up with a clever alternative. Rather than turning to Google, we came up with our own concoction and I must admit, it's delicious!
