Add four years when a woman in Hollywood tells you her age, a producer once told me. “It’s expected that they lie about their age,” he said.
In a city where women have cosmetic surgery in their 30s, and youth is a gleaming pillar of the LA Trifecta along with power and money, I had always told my true age, freely, until now.
After I had a baby last year I became very aware of my years. My doctor classified me as, “advanced maternal age.” In the movie Baby Mama, Tina Fey’s… Continue

I have to admit: I was one of those who expected madness, mayhem, injustice, an interminably long wait for results--in short, I expected the worst. How hope-instilling was it to be proven wrong? For the results to come in so swiftly, clearly, seemingly without complication--to gaze at the television with my husband, listening to The Speech, watching the crowds celebrating in Times Square, in Chicago, in Century City, CA, while our boy snoozed… Continue

Have you ever held your breath as you wait anxiously about any news about your children. Whether it be health, school or activity? I can finally come up for breath. While it seems like only yesterday I had Abby, it was actually 10 years ago. Abby has one of the most fatal heart defects called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. I was in the height of my nursing career when I got pregnant and an intensive care nurse. I still am an intensive care nurse but I work part time. Very part time. Abby… Continue

Sometimes, something may seem blatantly obvious to some of us while others are oblivious.
Case in point; violent video games.
Folks, there is a reason why there is a rating on video games. It is because for some reason, usually violence, the video game is not well suited for certain age groups. But, there are still parents who will wait in line or get on the pre-order lists for these games in an effort to make sure that their kid remains on the 'cool list'.

I continue to be moved by the historical events that took place yesterday.
America’s 1st African American President. I was elated when he won and like so many Americans I cried for his victory.
I continue to think about the possibilities for America and for it’s youth.
As a child I can recall so many times when I experienced prejudice as a Spanish/Puerto Rican American.
I know what it is like to be prejudged based on nationality rather than my… Continue

I just want to take a moment to thank all of the wonderful people that I came in contact with today that took the time to tell me that the belt from my long sweater was twisted inside my thong and that part of my left butt cheek was exposed.
First of all, some of you (especially my mom and sister) may be shocked to learn that I, a 41-year-old mother of three, wear a thong. I have struggled with panty lines my entire life--they are the bane of my very existence! I cannot stand the… Continue

Like many of the moms who belong to the Mom Bloggers Club, I maintain a separate blog elsewhere.
My blog,http:// iamharriet.blogspot.com
is my opportunity to learn how to express myself via writing. My main reason for writing in this blog is to learn how to express myself as a writer as opposed to blogging with a specific purpose such as a hobby.
I was pleasantly surprised this morning to learn that my blog is a featured blog in a… Continue

Okay, so other than election stuff and the regular work stuff, is anything exciting going on with you today?
Mary has the day off of school today. The school calendar says it's a 'teacher resource day', but I think it's to make it easier for all the teachers and school staff to go vote. That's cool. I don't have a problem with that. I do feel bad for the parents who have to arrange care for their kids while they're out of school. Kind… Continue

I just read a news story that was self described ad "groundbreaking".
According to the AP,
"research suggests that pregnancy rates are much higher among teens who watch a lot of TV with sexual dialogue and behavior than among those who have tamer viewing tastes.
According to the study, teens who watched the raciest shows were… Continue

Many of my readers already know that each month I select a charity or foundation that I create a necklace for and donate a portion of proceeds to the group for each sale. The donations do not stop at the end of the month but continue through out the year. The main reason I do this is to raise awareness and also raise funds for these groups.
The featured group for… Continue
