The Truth Hurts

Santa’s not coming to our house this Christmas. Earlier in the year we decided to drop the bomb and tell “J” the truth. It’s been a long year. Telling “J” the “truth” about Santa has been an eye-opener to us about where “J” functions.

Like many people with special needs “J” really struggles with conceptualizing. He is extremely literal. Wrapping his brain around the fact that Santa is not “real” has been nearly impossible and has given us so much insight to how his brain works and how… Continue

The other shoe

“J” had a headache today. He spent most of the morning asleep on the couch and his dad and I spent the morning trying not to hover. Thirteen year old boys get headaches. Everyone gets a headache now and then. Everyone feels a little run down and naps on the couch on a lazy Sunday. When that person is “J”, however, my heart sinks.

It’s an almost every day feeling I describe as “waiting for the other shoe to drop.” You know you’re downstairs and you hear someone taking their shoes off… Continue

Creating a Positive, Empowering & Mother-Friendly Breastfeeding Community

I hate complaining about something and not offering any solutions. And while my solutions often fall somewhere between “just hold hands and love each other” and “smite them all”, I often come up with something that works.

So, with that in mind, here are my thoughts on creating a positive, empowering and mother & baby friendly breastfeeding environment. I focus on my local hospital, the IWK, and my province but the information I provide can be used by…

Dueling Personas

With all the kids tucked into their beds, I make one last round to ensure their slumber is real and not just a ploy to get me to let my guard down. With eyes closed on all three accounts, I head toward my bedroom to meet an old friend. A confidant that existed in a time when wearing tight jeans was by choice, shaved legs were a priority and life was fueled by a plethora of energy. I climb into bed with my laptop, engross myself in an episode of Sex and the City while plunking my eyebrows and…

I Only Took One Picture...WHAT?

Yeah, with all the craziness yesterday I used my camera once to take a family photo and I wasn't even in the picture. Bummer. I didn't even get J digging in to his Thanksgiving plate, actually he didn't eat one thing on his plate, he just wanted cheerios or crackers. I tried hard to get him to try a spoonful of mashed potatoes. J was dressed in a cute little corduroy pants, turtle neck sweater vest thing and I didn't take a picture! ....(read… Continue

More Thoughts on Breast is Best: Guilt-led breastfeeding

As a vocal breastfeeding advocate, a sex educator and a supporter of survivors of sexual abuse during their childbearing year I have ask myself many times about the validity of “pushing” bf’ing. Yes, breastmilk is best, but if we guilt woman into breastfeeding aren’t we hurting the cause?

And what do I mean by cause? Is it a cause? If we stopped pushing Breast Is Best as if it was a winning hearts and minds military campaign…

The Breast is Best Campaign in Nova Scotia- Is It Working?

I used to believe that breast is always best. I gave the stink eye to bottlefeeding moms, I towed the Breast is Best partyline.

I was wrong.

I passionately believe that breastmilk is the optimal food for your baby. That part is based on science and economics, not opinion. But is feeding your babe at the breast really best for every woman?

For me, as a sexual abuse survivor, breastfeeding was amazingly therapeutic. Breastfeeding my sons transformed my relationship with my…

What's passion got to do with it?

We are coming into the season of parties and food. We tell ourselves that we'll start on a new health regiment and fitness program after the holidays. How many times have we told that to ourselves? Why hasn't it worked before? Or maybe it worked for 3 months or even 6. Because it lacked PASSION. Find something you love to do. Shift your consciousness from losing weight to gaining health - from what you HAVE to do to what you WANT to do - from monthly membership at a gym to a WAY OF LIFE.
I…

Appreciation

I was driving down the road near my house when I noticed a sign at a local church. The words touched me so much that I pulled out a pen and paper and quickly scribbled them down. The sign was simplistic, not one

of those flashy billboard type things and the message was plain as well.

The sign read: You get appreciation by giving it away.

These simple words spoke to my heart so much…

I don't think I am a very good housekeeper!
