A DIY Christmas: I Started Decorating for Christmas Yesterday

Ok. Finally, I couldn’t stand it – the fact that my house still looks like it belongs in the middle of July more than the middle of November. Oh – or the fact that my storage room looks like THIS and won’t be looking any better until I have a chance to go through all of our decoration boxes:

So I decided to start …

Serene Sunday - What Inspires You

Serene Sunday - finding what inspires you can bring you serenity.

Inspiration is often defined as the process of being mentally stimulated to do something or to feel something. Inspiration is often thought of in relation to something creative. When I think of inspiration, I think of something that gives a little push to someone to get them to take a leap. It is important to find out what inspires you to do your best and to move forward. Sometimes, life gets hard and when it does, work…

How to Treat Mommy in an Emergency

It was Saturday morning, so after a long, stressful week I was looking forward to taking a run around the block. By "run" I mean "mostly walk," but I managed to break into a slow jog a couple of times along the way. (I'm not much of a runner. My theory is that my ancestors were royalty from England, so it is not in my blood to be active or athletic in any way. But I occasionally attempt some sort of physical activity in order to avoid dropping dead of a laziness-induced heart… Continue

"Too Cute" on Animal Planet Gets "Too Racy"

The "Too Cute" series on Animal Planet is one of my favorite shows to watch with my 10-year-old daughter because it's, well, cute! I consider it one of the few "safe" programs to watch with kids because it's pretty wholesome and innocent.

If you've never seen the show, it consists of close-ups of fuzzy baby creatures doing adorable things such as falling down, rolling over, and getting stuck in silly places. Most of the time, it follows a litter of kittens or puppies from birth to… Continue

Best Supplements for Aspergers Syndrome

My 8-year-old son has mild Asperger's, which often results in "sticky" thoughts and vocal tics. By "sticky" thoughts I mean these obsessive ideas that he just can't get past. For instance, if he forgets to watch a favorite TV show, he will whine, complain, and cry about it for hours afterward. The thought gets "stuck" in his head.

He is very aware of this problem, and when I say, "Is your brain sticky today, Buddy?" he'll say, "Yes, but I can't help it!"

As a result of the… Continue

Tweens and Responsibility: Let Them Spread Their Wings

In recent years I've realized that my husband and I have entered the ”golden years” of parenting. The kids are no longer babies, but they haven't yet reached teenage hell. They play independently, they bathe themselves, and they know how to use the toilet. As a result, we get to have intelligent conversations with them, play complex games with them, and even teach them to get their own drinks and snacks. It's a glorious time to be a parent!

Unfortunately, the ”golden years” are not… Continue

Alternative Way to Treat Childhood Asthma?

My daughter was diagnosed with asthma when she was 3 years old. It has never been serious and only seems to flare up when she gets sick. She has only had one real asthma "attack" in which she felt she couldn't breathe and we had to give her the albuterol rescue inhaler. The other times have just been nonstop coughs and wheezing.

The doctors keep telling us she should outgrow it, but every time we think we're done with her asthma she gets another cough that brings that dreaded inhaler… Continue

What it Takes to Convince Lucy to Take a Pretty Picture

I know, I know. Something’s been lacking around here lately. And that something would be lots and lots of pictures of my miniature moose – aka Lucy the wonder dog. But you guys have no idea what it takes to convince this wannabe supermodel to take a couple of nice pictures! For one, I have to bribe her. Two, I have to pretend like I’m not about to snap a few shots of her. And even then it’s not a guarantee.…

Zesty Pot Roast - In Your Crock Pot

You may have noticed that I am absolutely obsessed with cooking in my crock pot. You know what? Crock pot cooking is cool. Baby Fix: A Baby Photo Dump

love taking pictures of my little man. But sometimes I kind of forget about using our nice camera – and most of my pictures come out via Instagram. Know who’s really good about taking pictures of la babe with the *nice* camera? The hubs. He gets a kick out of having lovely little baby photo shoots at night when we’re all hanging out. And…

That's Right! I am the Bossity Boss!

Me: Zaffy, go do that incredibly boring thing I told you to do five minutes ago. You know, the same thing you neglected to do ten minutes ago, the first time I asked.

Zaffron: Fine.... bossity boss.

Me: Hey Zaff. For that you get to go to your bed.

Zaffron huffs and stomps off to her bedroom. I can't…

Things I've Learned This Week

** The time change is making me think I'm late to everything.  (O.k., so later than usual).

** My town has already put up its Christmas decorations.  So we can now eat our Halloween candy under the mistletoe.

** After a thorough cleaning of my daughter's room, turns out there isn't a dead body in there after all.

Things I Love: The Uppababy Vista Stroller

When I first found out we were pregnant, one of the first things I did was start reading about not just what I needed to know about actually being pregnant, but about all of the super cute baby gear that we were going to need. And before looking at clothes and toys and all of the little accessories that go hand in hand with preparing for a little one, I started looking at all of the big pieces we needed. The things that actually required research before purchasing. And one of…

It's a Thin Line, Part 4

Writing “My Love Affair” and “Why Billy Joel Rocks” – pieces in which I extol the virtues of some of my favorite cultural phenomena – reminded me that it'd been a while since I posted a “Thin Line” list, a compilation of my pet peeves and secret pleasures. So I’ve decided to get down to brass tacks and have another go. For…

Strong women should not crush weaker women: How do you do it?

I use to have a job that had a lot of prestige. . a great title. . offered me a great opportunity. But the lady I worked for cared more about making a dollar than she did about the people who worked for her. She would give you feedback that was honest, but it cut like a knife.

I learned so much from that lady about running a business. . taking ownership of a product. . adhering to a scope. . providing quality work. . getting work done on time and under budget.
