Chocolate Chip Cookies That Are Similar to the Cookies in the Mall

Learn how to make chocolate chip cookies that are similar to the ones that you can buy at the mall.  I made the Nestle Tollhouse version and few years ago.  When I tasted them, they tasted bland as if something was missing.  These cookies were exactly what I was looking for.  For the recipe, visit us at Uplifting Families for the full recipe.

Recipe for a Moist and Juicy Turkey

For Thanksgiving, we go to my husband’s parents house each year.  I haven’t had to cook a turkey in a long time, which I kinda miss because my turkey always came out very moist and juicy.  In fact, many years ago I would cook the turkey on the BBQ grill (charcoal).  I loved cooking on the BBQ grill because that meant that I had more room in my oven for cooking the side dishes.  However, you can still make my awesome turkey in the oven.  For the recipe for a moist and juicy turkey learn…

DIY Christmas: An Artsy Entryway Tree

Every entryway needs a little holiday cheer. But not every entryway has a lot ofspace for an full on Christmas tree. Which is where sticking some sticks in a vase can come in handy. Ok – this is a little more involved than just tossing some sticks in a vase. But to be honest, it’s not that much harder than it sounds! Before you start, you’re going to need a variety of “sticks” from the floral section of the craft store (all of mine other than the skinny gold ones…

That Bulky Thing

This may seem like a weird thing to be thankful for, but I’m thankful for that bulky mattress…

So, we upgraded to a new bed months ago. However, our old king mattress still lives in our home, much to my chagrin. The kids protested getting rid of it.  “Please mom, not yet!” It’s now become one of the kids’ favorite…

Lose the Baby Weight: Ab Exercises to Tone Your Tummy

So yesterday I told you guys that I’ve become an abdominal exercise fiend: not because I actually enjoy doing these workouts, but because they’re totally necessary to getting rid of that spare tire that appears after the baby makes his way out of your belly. So I’ve taken some ideas from my barre dvds and turned them into their own little workout – for integrating with my living room circuit or after doing some cardio. Feel free to interchange the…

The News

I never thought I would be one of them. Not that I ever judged them, because my younger sister was one. It just never occurred to me that it would be me. I had been so picky about finding “the one,” and at 37 I thought I did…until reality set in and I knew I hadn’t.

Being self-employed, I didn’t have health insurance. So I went to Planned Parenthood to get on the pill. The nurse asked, as they always do, when was the first day of my last menstrual cycle? I don’t know about you, but I…

Secrets to Lose Post Pregnancy Weight without Dieting!

Family and friends were dying to know what my diet was to be able to lose all my baby weight within 6 months.  First off, IT WAS NOT A DIET!  It was a simple combination of yoga and most importantly, healthy eating habits that have always been part of my life before, during, and after my pregnancy.  In our family, eating healthy is so habitual that it’s like brushing your teeth.  People usually associate eating healthy with high priced organic items.  Well, if you don’t know where to shop it…

Jumping In At The Deep End.

Basically I am still very new to this mom thing. I fell in love with my boyfriend almost a year and a half ago, and I fell madly head over heals in love with his daughter. So I jumped in at the deep end. This consequently is the best, and most difficult thing I have ever done. I left my home country for the very different life of Johannesburg. The move in itself faced me with a lot of challenges, some of which, a lot of which I am still adapting to.

In the UK, we sleep with our… Continue

Help The Victims of Hurricane Sandy by Hosting a Touchstone Crystal Jewelry Party

Thanksgiving is almost here. And while we’re all giving thanks – and thinking about all of the awesome Black Friday sales to take advantage of after the turkey’s been eaten – there are people on the East Coast whose lives have been devastatedby Hurricane Sandy. These people are struggling to just get their lives back to some kind of normal – much less worrying about what presents they can get at a discount on Friday.

I got an email the other day…

Expecting My Second Child - My Birth Story

My second pregnancy was a bit of a surprise as I wasn’t actively trying to conceive.  I found out in February 2000, that I was pregnant and was due October 9th, 2000.  When I was almost 20 weeks, I found out that I was having a little boy.  I was excited and nervous at the same time.  I had that feeling that I was having a boy since my cravings were totally different that my first pregnancy.  Continue reading my birth story at:  …

Expecting my First Baby As a Teen Mom

My first pregnancy was a bit of a shock, since I was just 18 years old and just out of high school. I found out that I was pregnant in April of 1996.  I was still living at home with my parents and wasn’t married to my boyfriend.  I knew firsthand that my parents would be very disappointed with me but for the most part my mom was supportive.  It was important that I tell them before they found out on their own, so I told my mom first.  She said she had already suspected something but…

Pulled Chicken BBQ Sandwiches - Super Duper Easy!

I am starting to think of myself as slightly obsessed with my crock pot. Oh well. Myobsession is your gain, my friends! This is one of my go-to recipes, because wealways have the ingredients on hand and it’s super duper easy to make! You’re going to need a total of three things: your crock pot, some chicken and your fave bbq sauce. We go through a lot of the stuff at our house – and tend to buy in bulk.…

My Marine

I

As I was driving home from work today, listening to one of my cd's, one of the songs, Place to Fall by Emphatic struck me.  It reminded me of the one person in my life that is life itself.

What do you call a man who is more than a hero?  The man who is everyday and extraordinary?  How do you describe the man that is indescribable?  Let me tell you a few things about this man and you tell me.

Two Months Post-Partum: Getting Back to Pre-Pregnancy Jeans

I feel like getting back into my “normal” jeans is a never ending task. Basically, I fit in them. But I fit differently in them. My tummy is getting flatter by the day (thanks to the much hated ab work I’ve been doing), but everything still feels like it’s in a different place than it was before I got pregnant. And I still feel that little pooch below my belly button. BUT: I do feel a lot better and – at least I can fit into my jeans again…

Thanks For That

With Thanksgiving Day just around the corner and both sets of grandparents coming into town, I feel the need to do some yoga breathing and compose a list of things I’m thankful for:

I’M THANKFUL…

  1. For my kind and generous husband
  2. That my kind and generous husband does all of our laundry
  3. For our healthy, thriving children
  4. For our neighborhood public school and its industrious teachers
  5. For the hours when that school is in session…

How to Know When You've Turned Into THAT Mom

So life with a baby starts. And some time goes by. Suddenly, your (my) baby is two months old. And while you (I) said that there was no way that you’d become thatparent – the one that you can tell is a total MOM from a mile away – you find that…you were wrong. You are TOTALLY that mom. And here’s how to figure it out:

1. You realize that you’ve started referring to yourself as “mommy” all the time. Like – even when…
