My Life (and Death) with Laundry

By Kristin Fast, Lifestyle Editor and In-House Wit-Cracker

With the rare exception, I do a load or two of laundry everyday… every. Single. Day. We are a family of 5, with two of those five being teenage boys… (teenage boys will wear three shirts in one day, but the same pair of pants for a week) which I am sure makes it clearer why I am engaged in a…

Dot Girl's First Period Kit

I have two little girls and I am dreading (I should say, embracing) the moment when they reach that time in their lives when they leave the innocence of childhood to enter the ever changing  (I’m talking hormones) woes of womanhood.

Ah, puberty. I remember the not-so-pleasant experience of getting my first period at school. I think that I remember wearing white…

A Thankful Heart

Last Friday the season of Lent began for over 1 billion Catholics around the world.  I am not a Catholic, however, I do like the idea of Lent- 40 days to mentally and spiritually prepare for the Easter celebration. One aspect I admire and decided to implement in my life is a daily list of five things to be grateful for. As I worked through the week it gave me insight into how I am blessed and how I should be thankful for what I have.

Entered Mom Central Blog Grant Contest

I made a decision to enter the Mom Central Blog Grant contest, and normally I am not one to enter contests that require getting votes but I have worked with this company many times and I really think this will help me to push forward in my mission to help others. SO many have a hard time focusing on the positive, I personally trained myself to focus my brain right back to a solution or a positive from any challenge life brings along.

Many call this the law of attraction, but…

Peanut Butter and Hopey on Feature Friday!

For this Friday I would like to introduce you to a woman and fellow blogger that I have a lot in common with. While, I don't have a four year old, I do have a two year old and I watch a 2 year old and an infant and my days are crazy sometimes. Its what I like to call organized chaos. Everything is scheduled, but on the surface looks like a tornado has run throw my house. It all gets cleaned up at the end of the day just in time for me to start over though, but I digress, here is Hope from… Continue

Japan, Charlie Sheen, and a Mom

This is the world my kids are growing up in.  The world I am raising them in.  A world I will have to explain and analyze and understand myself.

Even if I don't.

I am deeply saddened by the natural catastrophe in Japan.  Angry that it had to happen, frustrated that enough can not be done fast enough, and impressed with the resolve the country has to make the best of an impossibly horrible disaster.

It is not lost on me that this will not be the last disaster ever to…

Embracing the Hour Glass

“Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives.”

Nope, this is not about Days of Our Lives, or soap operas, or even time or sand…it is about aging and accepting the parts of us that no longer look like a twig, but now look like an hourglass.

My Heroes: A Cancer Story

For many years I worked in oncology nursing in the hospital setting.  I consider that time the most difficult of my career, yet the most rewarding.  I consider it an absolute privilege to have worked with patients suffering from cancer.  They did suffer too.  Most of my patients were very ill.  Most of them died from their disease.  I was there to see many of them die.  They left a mark on me, but not a scar.  They blessed me to the deepest part of my soul with their beauty, their grace, and…

Simple Steps for Preparing For an Emergency

Emergency Preparedness

Two years ago a rogue tornado tore through my neighborhood. Eight of my neighbors' homes were completely destroyed by the violent wind and rain.  The tornado came so suddenly, Dr. D. and I barely had time to get down to our basement. We huddled in a crawlspace under our stairwell as we listened to what sounded like a freight train blowing down our street. Our power,…
