Simple Thanksgiving Dinner

My five year old's Montessori class held its annual Thanksgiving celebration feast this morning. I signed up to bring the turkey, stuffing, gravy and vegetables. Did I start cooking yesterday? No. I started cooking at 6:15am and delivered everything to the school by 10am. No sweat.

Preparing Thanksgiving dinner does not need to be stressful. I've outlined, below, a simple menu that can be thrown together very easily in a matter of a few hours.

A Day in my shoes

I am wearing a pair of shoes.

They are ugly shoes.

Uncomfortable shoes.

I hate my shoes.

Each time I wear them, and each day I wish I had another pair.

Some days my shoes hurt so bad that I do not think I can take another step.

Yet, I continue to wear them.

I get funny looks wearing these shoes.

I can tell in others eyes that they are glad they are my shoes and not

theirs.

They never talk about my shoes.

To learn how awful my shoes are… Continue

We are a conspicuous family.

A note from Dillon's blogger...

On this week’s Dillon Blog, I posted an article by a Dillon family. They share some very important information about how they feel as parents of special needs children. I hope you take the time to read this article very carefully and take some of their suggestions to heart. I think you will understand what I am talking about after you read their story.… Continue

New-Baby We are now in our six month of pregnancy and as a dual income household it's time to start figuring out who's taking off of work when and coming up with a schedule to maximize our family time together. Basically, Mommy will be taking her 6 weeks of leave (obviously since she did all the work) while Daddy will take a couple of weeks vacation when baby is born. After… Continue

Black Friday Store Flyers

Ok, I know everybody here in US are excited about the Thanksgiving. But what I didn't know before as I am fully aware now, having spent 4 months here in NY, was that people here are more excited about Black Friday.

What the heck is Black Friday?

Forgive my ignorance, but growing up in the Philippines, I knew Black Friday was the day Christ was crucified and died on the cross (during Lenten season). And in Canada, we never heard the term Black Friday either as something to… Continue

Mothers Make a Difference, Not Television

Apparently the Disney Company is issuing refunds for its line of Baby Einstein DVDs and videos. Why? A group called the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood sued Disney for false advertising: showing Baby Einstein videos to your young child does not turn your child into a genius.

Well, no kidding. It doesn’t take an Einstein to figure that one… Continue

The Insanity Plea

Recently, I witnessed an accused person leaving court with an acquittal from a charge of causing GBH (Grievous Bodily Harm).

I was in court on a different official matter. I felt sad for both the accused person and the victims of his crime.

As I glanced at the family and friends of the victim , huddled together, heads bowed, my heart sank.

Their faces clearly showed their pain , bitterness and disgust at the outcome of months of court appearances.

The victim survived the… Continue

I Write Love Letters and Save Them

I write love letters to my sons. I save them after they’ve read them, in the back of their sock drawers. They resurface when it’s time to do laundry and get buried again when we put the clothes away.

I file away artwork. The large pieces are in a suitcase in the basement, up off the floor in case the ten-year old hot water heater decides to blow, or the plumbing explodes while we’re out of town. I’ve heard about that happening. It only happens when you’re not home.

Their… Continue

A Little Black Kitty and A Lot of Tears

raintree1 This week has been a little foggy for me. As some know, we had some bad news over the weekend and found out our dear little kitty, Ebby had kidney failure. It was terrible; I had seen changed behavior in her, a little lost weight and symptoms that reminded me of when she had a "kitty cold". But at the vet office we found out she was in very bad shape and there was really nothing the vet or we could… Continue

The Skinny Girl Inside Me

There's a phrase I love that says, "There's a skinny girl inside me screaming to get out, but I can normally shut her up with cookies." I laugh every time I hear it because it is so true. We all have that little voice inside our head that says, "Get the apple instead of the chips," or "Grab some water instead of that Coke." However, most of the time, we can shut that voice up pretty easily with something yummy.

As I… Continue
