Disney On a Budget: Accomodations

When traveling to Disney World, you have a few different options as far as accommodations: stay at a Disney property resort, stay at a hotel, or rent a property nearby. If you are on a budget, you may think that your best best is one of the first two options, but today I want to tell you why you should consider renting a home or apartment near the Disney Resorts.

When looking for details on saving on accommodations, I turned to my close friend Crystal, who is a…

Show & Tell: When Your Little Salmon Swim Upstream

I was recently commiserating with a co-worker. She mentioned that her oldest, who has one more year to go before graduating college with a degree in engineering, has decided that even though his world is very comfortable (his parents were paying his tuition, room and board) he’s taking break to figure out what he wants to do with his…

ONE OF MY FAV EASTER MEMORIES

For 36 Easters, I've had the privilege of partying & celebrating what Jesus did that no other 'god' can do. Although his body was dead & locked in a tomb, He AROSE from it! A few years ago, I had the huge

privilege of being in my church's Easter Gospel Choir. OK, I probably took it more seriously than most… Continue

Ode to the McDonald's Hamburger

I am a child of the 60’s and I admit that I love McDonald’s hamburgers. Not the cheeseburger, not the Quarter Pounder, not the Big Mac…but a simple hamburger. I also admit that I have eaten at

McDonald’s all over the world and there is some comfort in walking into the

golden arches and knowing that the hamburger will taste the same in Moscow as

in Wichita.

why i like babies and dogs

so, i work in a facility where i watch babies. i'm hoping to get a full time job as a librarian but until then the babies give me something to wake up for. anyway...i work in a room with babies from 6 weeks to 18 months. its called the babyroom. clever, huh? so here is why i like the babyroom. babies (much like dogs) dont care what you look like. whether youre unemployed, rich, thin, overweight, black, green, blue hair, etc. as long as you show interest in them MOST of them will like you.…

Discipline

Does anyone else have the experience of disciplining your child and seeing that those around you are embarrassed or uncomfortable? I can see why maybe this happens to people who don’t have kids. Perhaps it

catches them off guard or whatnot, but why do grandparents get

uncomfortable?

This morning we have a rough go of it to say the least. I am not sure what is going on with Queenie, although I have a couple different theories including molars coming in, the fact that she was…

Is Child Obesity Child Abuse?

A South Carolina woman was charged with criminal neglect when her 14 year old son reached a shocking 555 pounds. I am sure that many of you can understand the charge because the example is so egregious. But how do we know this is really the mother’s fault? And if we do decide to charge parents of obese kids with child abuse, where do we draw the line?

As a Pediatrician and Child Obesity Expert, I see a wide range of overweight children. Some patients are simply ten pounds overweight… Continue

Is Your Child Vitamin D Deficient?

We were starting to think that Vitamin D deficiency was a thing of the past. I mean, when was the last time you met someone with rickets? But a recent study in Pediatrics showed that over six million children in the United States do not get enough Vitamin D. That is one out of every five kids! It seems that Vitamin D deficiency is more common than we thought.

Vitamin D is an important vitamin! New studies are proving that vitamin D can help prevent many diseases such as cancer,… Continue

Whole Milk Is Not Appropriate For Kids: So Why Are Schools Still Serving It?

Recently, America’s school lunch menus have been under fire and parents are becoming increasingly concerned about the state of their children’s health and well-being. Federal law, under the School Lunch Act, provides nutritional guidelines and criteria to which schools must adhere. These guidelines include the amount and type of foods the cafeteria must offer, in addition to placing limits on nutrients like saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. Specifically, school lunches must provide 1/3 of… Continue

What's Up With Your Eggs?

What are your plans for Easter weekend?

Last year we had all 5 of the kids and I took them to a local egg hunt. My hubby worked 7 days a week then (at his last job) and couldn’t go with me, but I was able to talk my mom into going to help out with the kids. It wouldn’t have been too difficult by myself, but since my son was just a year and a half he needed most of the attention. They split the area up into sections for different age groups and have games and little booths for…

Why Child Development and Parenting Research is Important

In response to some posts in the past, some readers have made comments along the lines of, "Duh, why do we need research to figure that out." I personally do not take offense at such comments because I'm not the one doing the research, I'm just reporting it. Besides that, I have at times felt… Continue

Letting Go

“Letting go doesn’t mean giving up, but rather accepting that there are things that cannot be.” ~Anon

There are many things I envision doing in the two hours I normally have for myself, after my children go to bed. Fixing items is definitely not one of them.

After dinner, my daughter decided she was going to measure every piece of furniture in the living room, every knick-knack on tables and cabinets, and even her dad, who was lying oblivious on the couch… Continue

When Your BFF Is a Psychic

One of my best friends is psychic. Yep, you read me right, a bona fide, intuitive, medium kind of ghost whisperer. Brenda and I

met in kindergarten and were friends all the way through high school. We lost touch after graduation and I

hadn’t seen nor heard from her in 26 years.yes""> I had reconnected with friends from high school and she was

one of them. We had emailed a

Backseat Driver: The Car Seat Conundrum

(excerpted by the author)

Nobody ever knows what to get for a car seat. There are a surprising number of options from mainstream and specialty manufacturers. The car has become, after all, an extension of our homes, and the infant car seat in particular, an extension of baby’s crib, in itself an extension of mother’s womb.…
