For years, home-cooked meals were placed on the back burner and we “treated” the family to fast-food more than multiple times a week. This was hurting our health and was depleting our wallet faster than the paycheck was rolling in. Desperate for a change, and after a…Continue

This is my absolute favorite macaroni and cheese ever! If you follow me on Twitter you already know that I was pretty upset about 2 weeks ago that I got everything I needed to make it but I forgot to buy macaroni noodles! Well, when my parents came to visit us, I knew we would be barbecuing so I was like “YES! THIS MACARONI WILL BE A PERFECT SIDE!”…Continue

To make the best Oreo milkshake you just need four ingredients! Oreo milkshakes make a great summer day treat or any day for that matter. So creamy, so delicious.
You’ll need a blender, packet of Oreo biscuits, good vanilla ice cream, I use Kelly’s Cornish clotted cream ice cream as it just tastes…Continue

With working, chauffeuring, play dates, school and fun, there is never enough time to fit everything in. I do love to cook and test out new recipes, however some nights I need quick, easy and not take out. Which is one reason why I LOVE my crockpot. However, I am always up for giving it a night off and trying something new. I was drawn to this recipe as it is quick, easy, healthy, all in one and no fuss. It is a full meal in one pan, only a few ingredients, that you cover toss in the…Continue

It was a few days ago, that I promised a recipe for super easy granola bars, and boy do I mean easy! I bought all of the ingredients about a month ago, and for some reason kept putting of making them. Once I finally did get them made, I knew that it would definitely be a recipe that I would use again, with just a little bit of tweaking from the original one that I used. This post will include both recipes, the one I have already made and the one that I will make tomorrow or the next…Continue

If I could only eat one meal a day, it would be breakfast. I love, love breakfast. I love breakfast so much that when I am feeling too lazy to cook dinner, I'll whip up a poached egg and turkey bacon sandwich or (my very favorite) banana pancakes. When the Aunt…

Happy weekend, folks! This week's meal plan is brought to you by the great meat sale at Safeway this week. While I don't have any soups this week, I have primarily casseroles, so I'm still not using a lot of meat. I'm also trying to utilize products already in my pantry, so that I can stock up on a bit of the meat that's on sale. I'm running low on some kinds of meat in my freezer-which is actually normal for this time of the year. We'll start seeing pork going on sale soon, and…Continue

Who here has never burned dinner? Show of hands, please? Great, no hands.
Has anyone ever misread a recipe and ended up with something not fit for man nor beast? Oh look, lots of hands there!
Have you ever forgot to take a crucial dinner ingredient out to thaw, or forgotten to pick it up at the store? Yes, I thought so.
Ever set your kitchen on fire, rendering your stove inoperable? No? Just me, then.
I've had all of those…Continue

Last week in the Backwoods Kitchen didn't turn out quite the way I wanted it to. First, my husband was home most of the week, which means helping him on large projects rather than focusing on smaller things that can wait. Also, I've been majorly sleep deprived this week-which I'm sure most of you mothers, and many of you fathers, who are reading this, can empathize with. I also became obsessed with cleaning my walls. Since we use a wood stove for heat, the walls get grimy fairly…Continue

My meal plan for this week is a little challenging. For a long time I've been doing the Sunday through Saturday plan, and I never changed it when my husband got a job that left him on call every day but Sunday, meaning that was the only day I could really count on to be able to go grocery shopping. Which left me in a fog come Sunday morning, trying to decide what to do for breakfast and lunch. It's not that it never occurred to me to change it, it's that it never occurred to me. Apparently,…Continue

I have always tried to feed my family healthy foods. Tried being the keyword. Cost is usually an issue for many families when they are trying to feed their families the best, and we have been no different. Moving to the backwoods reinforced this commitment for me, and I'm bound and determined to buy, and grow, the healthiest food possible for my family. I realize this will be an area that we will have to continue to grow in, but I'm all for that.
Here's my list of things I…
