Things I've Learned This Week

** My kids think Santa can make ANYTHING, which means that I am totally and completely SCREWED.

** "Customer" and "service" are two words that, sadly, don't belong together anymore.

** Static electricity is a very unfortunate side effect of Winter.

Things I've Learned This Week

** The time change is making me think I'm late to everything.  (O.k., so later than usual).

** My town has already put up its Christmas decorations.  So we can now eat our Halloween candy under the mistletoe.

** After a thorough cleaning of my daughter's room, turns out there isn't a dead body in there after all.

Trick or Treat for Busy Moms

Fall feels like it has officially arrived when pumpkins begin to make appearances on front steps.  It is especially fun to see the transformation from robust orange vegetables to scary faced creatures staring back with illuminated geometric eyes and wide mouthed grins.

With this hello to fall comes the…

Halloween is NOT a Religious Holiday

Halloween is probably my favorite holiday. Each year as it approaches, I find myself getting more excited, happy and more creative as Halloween crafts and costume ideas come to mind.

I also find myself getting more annoyed by people who don't understand the holiday. The topic has come up several times on different mom forums where I am a member. Over and over again I read...

"We don't celebrate Halloween because it's against our religious beliefs." or

"We don't want to…

Alternative Treats for Halloween

Who says treats are limited to candy?  No one wants to be “that house” during Halloween, but there are plenty of little trinkets and snacks kids will enjoy that aren’t packed with sugar.  Read the rest at our blog!

Shopping for Halloween? Better hurry; it's later than you think!

Last year, I was taken by surprise.

I went shopping for Halloween decorations in mid-October, only to be met by bare shelves, a couple of sad-looking skeletons and a few assorted window clings.

Primarily, I saw a lot of Christmas angels and sparkling candy canes.

I'm sure I had the same look of outrage on my face as when I went out looking for snow pants in November and found shelves of T-shirts and ads for bikinis. But that's a different story.

So this year,I…

Halloween 2011 Recap

Once again one of my very favorite holidays has passed me by faster than I could say, "Boo!"  Yes, Halloween has come and gone and left me with a massive candy overdose.  I seriously don't think I'll be able to look at a Twix bar the same without puking ever again (at least not until next week anyway).  The festive weekend was certainly chalked full of all kinds of fun while it lasted though.

It all started with our annual adults-only costume party, which…

It Takes A Village: Does "Community Spirit" Still Exist?

I used to love this song when I was a child:
Sesame Street was the "bee's knees" and this song rocked my world. Who were the people in my neighborhood? I wasn't sure but I knew I wanted to find out, at least that's what the song compelled me to do. Being a kid growing up watching Sesame Street along with the Electric Company, I listened intently…

Boo! Are you ready to take charge of the Halloween party?

I love Halloween. I love it so much I decided to head up my little boy's class party for the holiday. Now, assuming that someday you, too, will want to head up a class party, allow me to share a few things I learned:

  • Find out if the other moms are wearing costumes. That way, you won't come in dressed like a cat - complete with painted-on whiskers - and find out no one else dressed up. (All together now: Awwwkward!!)
  • Find out if you're in charge or if…

UnHappy Halloween!

I hate Halloween. It has not been a holiday that I enjoy as long as I can remember, for various reasons.  I try to get into it, but can’t.
My kids don’t eat a lot of candy.  We could just go to my mom and dad’s house and we’d be set for the amount of candy that they would eat (my parents fill their bucket).

Halloween on a Saturday? Yes Please!

Hallow een is one of our favorite holidays; we go all out each year! Dressing up is serious business, even for the adults. Connecticut lawmaker Tim Larson has made an interesting proposition this year – designating Halloween as the last Saturday of October versus the 31st. As soon as I read about it, I was on the…
