Something About Einstein 8_11

When I was eight-years-old, my young mother handed me a slip of paper with an Einstein quote, “He who joyfully marches to music rank and file, has already earned by contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would surely suffice.”

Why she gave this to me and…

An Act of Unkindness Inspires 14 Words of Wisdom for my Boys

Yesterday, as I was taking a leisurely stroll to the gym, I noticed a pickup truck driving through my neighborhood.  It was noticeable because it was a 2 seater with about 4 kids, mostly young boys crammed into the front seat.  As it drove by me, a boy in the passenger seat who looked between 15 to 17, looked at me and yelled a racial epithet, preceded by a 4 letter word.  My immediate thoughts were "Did I just hear that?" and "How weirdly random was that?".…

Love Is Enough

I love Valentines Day! I know I am a sap. My friends say if I were a color I would be pink for sure. So naturally I adore this gushy, blush colored holiday, however commercial it may be.

Given the combination of the times, and my ridiculous schedule  a romantic date with candles, great wine, stimulating conversation , and a hot black dress are not happening this year. I admit in years past I would have been disappointed by the truth surrounding the check book and day timer on this of…

February - The Month of Love, Mystery and Forgiveness

The month of February focuses our attention on love.  Cards are bought, candy is given, kisses abound.  What is it about love?  We simply cannot get enough of it.  “I love you” and “I’m in love with you.”  Is there a difference? Yes.  “I’m in love with you” has more infatuation and projection attached and “I love you” has more of day-to-day companionship attached.  Each has its mystery.  Mystery, by definition, cannot be completely understood.  I like the word mystery because it elevates a…

Girlfriends = Sanity

Looking back at my life, I see how important my girlfriends are and were in my life.  From keeping me out of trouble; being the voice of reason; having my back; providing free therapy sessions; making me laugh through my tears; and just plain listening when it seems no one else could -- my girlfriends have all made lasting and important contributions to strengthening and supporting me in times of need. …

Sorry, Snuggie - you're just too comfy

So I finally caved and bought my daughter a Snuggie. Yes, yes, you know, those gigantic blanket things with sleeves.

Personally, I think they look just plain silly, but she's been wanting one for ages. And not just any Snuggie, of course, but the "Peace and Love" Snuggie with multi-colored peace signs all over it, if you can dig that, man.

She keeps telling me it is "soooo comfortable," and that I just have to try it on.

Absolutely not. First of all, if…
