Stuff!

Where does it come from? All of this stuff that we have?

I ask myself this daily as I am picking up 700 puzzle pieces and attempting to put them in their designated, curved edge, places on the boards. I never have all of the pieces, nor do I ever look under the couch to see if they have scurried there, avoiding the six feet that run, aimlessly, with no regard for the piece's feelings should they stomp them flat in their hurry. I think I consciously leave them under there out of… Continue

Sweet Sixteen

Mom, can we give PRETTY GIRL a ride to the movies tomorrow?”

“Sure,” I responded absently, typing away on my computer.

I knew my son Josh had arranged for a group of friends to go see Toy Story 3 the next day and I often cart his friends around for their various social engagements, so I didn’t give his request another thought.

Until I was blow-drying my hair the next morning, that is.

You know how it goes. You’re… Continue

Lasts

Have you ever noticed that parents tend to focus a lot on "firsts"?

We celebrate the first time our baby lifts his head.

The first time she rolls over.

The first word, first tooth, first step.

Then as they grow older, it's…

His first boy-girl party.

Her first dance.

First date, first zit (devastating!), first time behind the wheel of a car.

The other day, I was cleaning out my planner pockets and… Continue

Transitions

I've started going through pictures of my daughter from infancy up till now. Eighteen years worth. I’m doing this in preparation for the graduation party video I was going to create (now she is), and for the surprise scrapbook I'm making for her to take to college with her. (No longer a surprise because I accidentally mentioned it and now she keeps removing any pictures where she thinks she looks the least bit funny. Like this one: …

Banning the Dictionary

I read a story a few weeks back about a school district in California pulling all copies of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary from its libraries because a parent complained the dictionary was being used to look up "age inappropriate" words by students. When I read this story I literally laughed out loud.

Banning the dictionary? Really?

Let me start by saying, I'm all for keeping things age appropriate. When our kids were younger, we were some of those weird parents…

Driving Lessons

It sounded like a good idea at the time.

I had read an article about these super-cool magnetic bumper stickers, CAUTION NEW DRIVER, and thought to myself. What a brilliant idea! Whenever I'm having my newly permitted child practice driving skills, I'll just slap it onto the back of the ol' van. Then all the other kindly drivers will be instantaneously aware and think to themselves, "Oh, look. How sweet, a new driver. I'll give him a nice, wide berth so he has plenty of room as he…

For the rest of you, if you recall, I left off in my story with the hand model who had just moved in behind us.

Well, I noticed whenever my hubs was outside working in the yard with the kids, the hand model would always come up to the fence for a chat or bearing an invitation to a pool party she…

Baby Stuff Giveaways

New mothers can get help from many websites that offer them baby stuff giveaways for free and it can be nice to try out some new baby products and save some expenses on your baby's basic needs. As a new mother myself to little Noah, I found it very helpful when the baby was born and it saved me more than money, it saved me a lot of time to go check baby items that would fit me and my baby.

It is very important to be comfortable with your baby as… Continue
