Let’s face it - the unknown is daunting. Even extensive planning can't always prepare you for challenges you may face in your entrepreneurial endeavors – whether you’re a startup CEO, a handbag designer or an aspiring indie author. Sometimes you just need to trust in yourself and be confident in your abilities. Obstacles may seem insurmountable at first glance but if you are dedicated to your efforts and you do the proper research, you WILL work through them.
You can’t crush true…Continue

My workspace is pretty standard, very practical, but kind of boring if I'm being honest. Lots of desk space, tons of papers covering said space, cabinets, laptops, ever-present mug of coffee. I try to keep it organized but it's not easy when ideas are constantly flowing out of my head and onto Post-Its. My name is Kristen and I'm a Post-It addict. Whenever I get a thought, I jot it down and stick it...well, wherever I can find space, which is a commodity.…Continue

In the period leading up to your big day, the best advice I can give consists of one very important word - plan.
Planning is critical to a successful launch, so make a list of everything you can possibly do to make your event as grand as possible. Here are a few suggestions to consider:

One of the challenges startups often face is finding time to establish a robust online presence that fully represents their business, value proposition and scope of services. Understandably, preliminary efforts are concentrated more on the service offerings themselves but even if a company offers products and services that are in high demand, if nobody can find the company, it won't be able to make a sale.
I recently connected with the owner of …Continue

Blogging is a great way to connect with a target audience on a somewhat personal level on one condition... you actually BLOG. It sounds great in theory - start a blog, write about a cool topic, get a bunch of readers to follow you, and BOOM! All of a sudden you've graduated to Perez Hilton status, with 14,500,000 estimated monthly users. Who wouldn't want THAT????
But you need compelling content that people crave. It doesn't happen overnight and it definitely won't happen unless you…Continue

Self-published authors have a pretty steep learning curve if they want to joint the ranks of the bestsellers. And I'm not talking about the Amazon bestsellers, I'm talking about the New York Times and USA Today bestsellers. Not an easy feat. It also doesn't happen for everyone. Authors can bust their tails for years and years, writing book after book and never make…Continue

It had been a while since the last time Illy and I had gone on a date. Sure, we'd done things together as a family, but it wasn't concentrated time with just us. We checked out the calendar, selected a date, and put our names in the box. This was our date and Nothing was going to change that... hopefully. Well, the day finally arrived and, although I was already tired from a full day out with all three…Continue

My husband and I celebrated 10 years of marriage! Crazy, right?!
Well, we wanted to do something special to celebrate but our youngest was only four months and I’d be breastfeeding; so we decided spend our 10 year anniversary trip... with the kids. Not overly romantic, I know, but sometimes you gotta make the best of the situation. An all inclusive Jamaican resort was our destination of choice. We’d never been there before so it would still be special and it was all inclusive, which…Continue

A multitude of potential pitfalls can negatively impact entrepreneurs as they eagerly try to build their fledgling companies…and basically crush their spirit if allowed. In my experiences, there are four reasons that stand out the most:

Bill Rancic has certainly come a long way from his win on The Apprentice. He was just featured on The Rhode Show to talk about a new campaign he is running with Intuit Quick Books to celebrate the success of small businesses in America, which have accounted for two-third of new jobs created in the United States in the past decade. They’d run a similar campaign a few years back and it was so wildly successful, they’re going to…Continue

Okay, it may not always work as planned, depending on your audience. But I can tell you it will make your headline click-worthy. It doesn't have to be graphic either, by the way. Just suggestive. =)
PR is EXPENSIVE so anything you can do on your own to generate buzz will reduce your burn rate. You can pitch editors yourself but if you don't have a hook, they don't have a story. The surest way to get a response is to give them the whole setup. If you can't hook an editor, you won't…Continue

I love spinning tales of romance in the Silicon Valley setting. I'm told I seriously over-glamorize the lifestyles of my heroes and heroines but whatever. I write FICTION so isn't that kind of a requirement? I mean, I have to keep things interesting. right? <wink, wink="">
As an entrepreneur, I am fascinated with goings-on in the Valley. There's such an aura over Sand Hill Road; it's just bubbling over with innovation, creativity and energy. Being part of that atmosphere,…Continue

Marketing. It's a word that simultaneously excites me and makes me cringe. Platforms are constantly changing, making it difficult to reach a target market (ahem, Facebook), prospective customers are tuning out more and more because there is a constant glut of information being thrown at them, key performance metrics that trended positive six months ago may not mean much now because marketing channels are flooded with content and becoming largely ineffective.
So the question is...with…Continue
