In February 2018, I made a decision to take a break from alcohol. Goodbye to the glass of wine while cooking dinner (that often turned into 2 or 3 by the end of dinner). I've taken many breaks in the past, the longest being during my pregnancies. Other times it was related to a diet challenge, be it Paleo or Whole30. However, I always looked forward to "breaking the fast" when the challenge was over. My few drinks a week, or every few days, would always escalate to drinking more often than…Continue

Rainbows and puppies, sunshine and kittens, rainbows and unicorns... we know life isn't always (actually is very rarely) any of these. But, we still want to reach for the pretty picture. It's around the next corner, right? After that promotion? After that closet is finally organized? After I come up with the…Continue

When I was questioning my drinking habits, I found the amount of books and resources out there overwhelming. Keeping in mind that there is no one "right" way to become alcohol free, these are my top 5 resources when you are ready to explore sobriety, or just cutting back on your drinking:

You see them on street corners, hiding in doorways, furtively watching, waiting for their next fix, selling drugs, or perhaps they have just had a shot.
When you see drug addicts or alcoholics on the streets, or in the dark corners of bars, do you ever wonder why, and how, they became addicted?
What made this person take that particular route through life, and at what stage couldn’t…Continue

At a certain age it seems like you have to drink to be considered an adult. While I’m not a complete prude when it comes to the idea of having a drink or two, I definitely cannot keep up with the Jones’ when it comes to wine drinking or partying.
The reasons for this might be based on the fact that I am…Continue

Women face greater chances of developing alcoholism than men do, according to several sources, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which explained that even though men may drink larger amounts of alcohol and drink more frequently, women are more likely to experience the most serious and more long-term effects of drinking. This is largely due to gender differences in body structure and chemistry that…Continue

I used to have only a few cups of coffee every year. And then I started having coffee time with a friend of mine at work, so now I have coffee on a more regular basis. It's still not every day, but around once a week.…Continue

While reading my son the story of Dumbo, I had forgotten there was a passage around the clowns drinking some "funny water." And of course my son didn't understand what that meant. So that became the moment when I told my five-year-old about the effects of alcohol.
We had talked about alcohol before at the…

At a recent happy hour with my coworkers, we started talking about our 21st birthdays. There were the usual tales of being taken out by friends to have their first legal drink, with lots of admissions that they had had alcohol well before that milestone birthday.
When it came to me, I told the truth: I…

Many parents often wonder if they should drink alcohol in front of their children. If you do drink alcohol in your home, do you wait until your children are in bed or do you consume it in front of them? I personally feel that if you are going to drink in front of your children that you should consume it…Continue

You know it's gonna be a good day when you're strolling through the wine aisle at the grocery store on a random Saturday morning and someone's offering you a shot of vodka. After a long week of racing…Continue

Sure, we try hard to be as health conscious as possible, but when Audrey and I get together, cocktails abound (thankfully, Audrey is 2000 miles away, so our martini abuse is not so frequent). And, Audrey will be here next week. Martini glasses are sure to be put in use. Unfortunately for us, now that we are both trying to fit our not-so-young bodies into little bathing suits,…

Always on the lookout for interesting “indie” brands in all categories, we thought it would be fun to pay tribute to another type of art, that is, the art of fine booze-making. Micro-distilleries, like micro-breweries have become more and more popular in the last decade. With reason. Many of these micro-distilleries make award-winning vodkas, far superior in taste and quality to the commercial brands. But, since award-winning in the vodka world pretty…

At the end of the summer, I sent two of my sons and our moose sized dog Dutch, down the lane to pick blackberries. An hour later they returned, almost empty handed, with just a pitiful pile of berries tumbling around the bottom of their bowl. I had envisioned an overflowing bounty upon their return and was confused. “Uhmm, we found out that Dutch likes blackberries too!” they exclaimed with purple stained smiles and ran through the house on to their next adventure.

If you are heading out to any soirées this season, chances are you will have a drink (or two) and feel fine to drive home. Although the best bet is to trade that glass of bubbly for sparkling water,…Continue
