Learn How to Keep Your Child From Losing Their Belongings – 4 Ways to Label Your Child’s Back to School Gear

I can’t believe that school will be starting soon and in some areas classes have already started.  It is crazy to think about who fast this summer has gone by.  Last weekend I decided to take advantage of tax free weekend and I bought my children most of the items that they will need on the first day of school.  I also bought extra basic…

The Dreaded Food Allergy

See this kid?

He had an incident about a week ago. It all started with a fruit and nut bar sample at Costco. I didn't think much about trying the sample, seeing as Buddy has been exposed to about every nut under the sun. At almost 4, I naively thought we…

Food Allergy vs. Food Intolerance: How to know what's what

Food allergies and food intolerances are a couple of those things that no mom really wants to know about first hand. However, knowing about food allergies and intolerances can help you avoid a great deal of headache should someone in your family have to deal with food allergy or intolerance.

When someone says the words "food allergy", what comes to mind?

Hives, swelling, epi pens, asthma...

Did any of those pop into your…

For the past year  my head has been the bane of my existence. Oily, dandruff (oh, the dandruff) and the itch is unexplainable. It drives me nuts. I think I've used every shampoo on the market from the high end I had to order online to the cheap bottom shelf at Walmart. I've used different conditioners, after conditioners, leave… Continue

What's a Mom's Job?

One son living off formula and on a feeding tube and another son with hearing aids - this could’ve been me.  But it’s not.  Instead, I have a son who’s healthy and thriving and another who hears fine.  Where we lucky?  Did God simply smile done at us?  Yes.  But I also know that my children are lucky to have a mom.

Let me share with you what I heard when I walked into a doctor’s office.

“But Doctor, isn’t there anything I can do to help Ethan overcome his…

Are You Kidding, Doc?

One son living off formula and on a feeding tube and another son with hearing aids - this could’ve been me.  But it’s not.  Instead, I have a son who’s healthy and thriving and another who hears fine.  Where we lucky?  Did God simply smile done at us?  Yes.  But I also know that my approach to their medical challenges made a world of difference.

What’s this approach?  It’s a combination of two things:  attitude and know how.

1.    Attitude:

“But…

Don't Let A Doctor Destory Your Baby's Hearing

Do you think that this is a sensational title?  It is posted this morning on CNN.com/Health.  I'm really curious to hear what you think because the story is about our family.  Will this encourage patient advocacy or will it harm doctor/patient relationships?

Do You Think You Have a Preset Time to Live? And . . . Who's the Nut When it Comes to Allergies?

Ready for this?  I don't think that it is a school's responsibility to be nut free.  I don't think airlines should be mandated to keep peanuts off a plane.  I don't think it should be mandatory for restaurants to provide nut-free options or for that matter, egg free, dairy free, soy free or anything else- to which all my son is allergic.  It's my issue and my responsibility.

It's certainly greatly appreciated and an act of goodwill when schools, airlines, restaurants and…

Mother's Instinct v. Worrisome Nut

Okay, so before my kids put me through the wringer and taught me a thing or two, I always thought that some moms were just nutty.  They just worried themselves for no reason whatsoever.  Now, I think maybe there was something to it- I now believe in mother's instinct.  So much so, I wrote a book, Little Patient Big Doctor.  But I still have my question- how do we know when it's instinct speaking and when it's just us being overly… Continue

Spring is here! Technically we are almost in summer but with the strange weather patterns it feels like spring just arrived. With that, my husband and I got this gardening feel surge through us. Mind you, we have never been the gardening-type folk. We both suffer from seasonal allergies and our parents enjoyed working in the garden so we never had to. So why start now?
