Playing on Facebook can get you a job - I'm not talking about Farmville, though I'm sure there must be something for which those skills can be used. While Facebook is thought of by many as a way to pass the time, the social network has broad business applications if you use it right. And it's only one of many networking, aggregating, blogging and mini-blogging sites out there, all of which can be used to pad your resume.…

Some days it’s more important to let the laundry go undone, the floors un-mopped and the dishes left in the sink. Today was one of those days and, since the weather was simply glorious, I opted to take the girls for a walk to the store and push back making dinner. In all honesty, we really did not need anything, but the dog and Baby Girl #1 both wanted a walk. So instead of starting a nice dinner, I defrosted shrimp while we walked to the store as the sun set. Once home, I made dinner in…Continue

Social media has revolutionized what it means to be a mother. Sure, the basics of mothering remain the same throughout the ages, but with all the information of the internet at our fingertips, new theories catch steam quickly, unsafe practices are brought to light in front of large audiences, and people can pick and choose which parenting methods work best for them in real time, as these methods are being used and tested by others.
One of the largest drawbacks to staying at home…

So I finally caved and bought my daughter a Snuggie. Yes, yes, you know, those gigantic blanket things with sleeves.
Personally, I think they look just plain silly, but she's been wanting one for ages. And not just any Snuggie, of course, but the "Peace and Love" Snuggie with multi-colored peace signs all over it, if you can dig that, man.
She keeps telling me it is "soooo comfortable," and that I just have to try it on.
Absolutely not. First of all, if…Continue

Does yellow make you feel like a banana? Is red just like lava? And does purple make you feel like an onion? If so, then you, too, will succeed as an Art Mom in my child's classroom.
Being an Art Mom is simple: You prepare a little program that teaches the kids about artists or color or a style of art, and then develop a little project to go with it. It's a lot of fun - second graders are a very appreciative audience.
I decided to talk about color and moods - you know, how does…Continue

This is a tough question... On one hand it may be a bit confusing to tie allowance directly to chores because we should be teaching our kids to help around the house when its needed, not just when it is part of their "to do" chores. Also, it can be very easy for parents to lose track of the chores that have actually been completed. A…Continue

There is no manual that pops out with the baby that tells you exactly how to raise a child. So what do we do? We ask friends, family or buy books. The problem with that is we are getting advice from someone else's experiences based on their own environment, family dynamic, genetics, issues or talents. We need to find out who WE are first and then raising a child will be easy. How do we do that? The only way to find answers is to ask questions.
The glitch is that we need to be…Continue

Melissa and Doug offer great educational toys for children ranging in ages from baby to young teen. They started making toys 20 years ago and have rocked the toy world since. They have nearly 1,000 unique toys for children of almost every age. We were recently able to add to our Melissa and Doug collection when we purchased a few set for Miss Monk and her new at home Tot School, they are a huge hit with her.
So much in fact that she…

I am a bit obsessive when it comes to feeding my kids. When I start looking at labels and realizing that EVERYTHING they eat has sugar, salt, and disgusting chemicals it just makes me crazy! Even so-called "healthy" foods like yogurt and granola bars are loaded with refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup. It makes me want to move to a cabin in the woods and feed the kids…Continue

Elliott gets her braces today. I can’t tell if she is excited or scared. The appointment was made in May when I took her to the orthodontist to see if she needed braces. Colby and I knew she needed braces because she has a receding chin and a wicked overbite, but we needed to respect the experts.
For seven months, Elliott has worried about, asked about, stewed about, and celebrated the fact she would be getting braces in December. As the rest of her required teeth fell out,…Continue

Aim. Snap. Learn. It’s just that easy for parents to get detailed information before buying a video game this holiday season. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) – which assigns the age and content ratings for computer and video games – has released an online video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Gs_BRexfrY) announcing the upgraded version of its free…Continue
