Safety Tips to Prevent Your Dream Pool from Becoming a Nightmare

Whether it’s a cosy hot tub, a full-sized pool or something in between, having a private place to take a dip at home is one of life’s greatest luxuries. There is little that compares to shrugging off the day’s troubles with a few relaxing laps or a good book and the gentle massage of…

Sandy Art

I found some leftover colored sand, and I left it up to Kay to decide what to do with it. She had an answer right away, "We could put glue on the paper and make pictures." Okay, works for me. I got the glue and paper, she carried the sand and we brought everything outside. (This definitely seemed like one of those 'outdoor crafts.') She started by mixing all the colors together, making a less-than-attractive combination, but the glitter that was also included at least made it sparkly. She…

I'm Not Done Yet...

“Go into the process of creating with a big healthy dose of uncertainty and be prepared to adjust as necessary.”

I read the above quote in a blog the other night before I went to bed and it reminded me about a young boy I had met earlier that afternoon while volunteering at the Building for Kids. For those of you who don’t know the Building for kids, it is a child centered museum. In this museum is a room called “the DaVinci Room,” which is a place where budding artists can get… Continue

Learn How to Keep Your Toddler’s Artwork off of the Walls and Furniture

A few weeks ago, my husband asked me if I needed anything from the store.  I asked him if he would pick up my youngest son a coloring book because he kept grabbing my pen from me when I wasn’t watching and kept telling me that he wanted to draw.  I took the pen away from him and he was devastated, even though…

Things I've Learned This Week

** I'm the only one here that seems to know that the floor is not a trash can.

** Shrinky Dinks may be the dumbest art project ever invented.

** I really don't need to know WHY there's a streak of poo on the side of the toilet.

** "Make Your Own Pizza Night" is really just my way of saying, "Fix Your Own Damn…

10 Great Interactive Creative Books

Today I'd like to offer up some suggestions for interactive books/journals for your kids. Only you'll find it difficult to keep your hands off of these bad boys, because they are so much more than coloring books. They're more like personal creativity trainers between two covers, as they are full of inspiration, fun, creative direction, and ways to make art in a non-threatening, playful way. Great for kids, but what adult doesn't need a little more of this in their lives,…

Father's Day Gift Guide

For a man, fatherhood can be one of the most blissful events in his life. That small bundle of joy that comes into his life not only brings with it great pleasures, but also adds a whole new dimension. While mothers are initially given all the special attention, the joy and the sacrifice of a father mostly goes unnoticed. So, to pay homage to all the men who are fathers or father figures, here is a Father’s Day gift guide flush of…

Things I've Learned This Week

** I like electricity.

** Mondays are like a zit on your chin that won't go away.

** Politics are so freaking political.

** My kids could be drawing on their walls with Sharpies at bedtime, but as long as they stay in their rooms, I really wouldn't care.

** Nothing makes you prouder than your son yelling from the…

Taking a leap: how trying something new can change how you create

Changing your drawing medium from pen and ink to brush and ink. With pen and ink you draw using lines, crosshatching or scribbles for building up your shadows. After a certain amount of time you don't really think about where your pen tip is going how your marks are being made you just look at your subject and draw, or int he case of drawing from your head you just draw. If one day you decide to try something different and pull out a bamboo brush and a jar of india ink the process of drawing…

Stylized Genealogy by MyTree and Me

Though all of us are curious about our roots and sometimes even fascinated by our family history, genealogy used to be perceived as a dry artform practiced by the retired folks, i.e. the ones who really had the time to delve into the research and the connections and the research again.

Well, here’s a company that is making genealogy look fresh and…
