The Price Of Your Children's Happiness

Miss K’s 2nd birthday is right around the corner (which I am finding hard to believe!) and I have been asked by at least 10 different people what kind of party we will be throwing her, are we hiring a place, getting in entertainers, having a bouncy house – I feel like I am surrounded by looks of horror when I say no, we are just going for a nice day out to the children’s museum – JUST THE FOUR OF US.  She is going to be 2 not 16, she isn’t even going to know its her birthday!…

The Last Firsts...

I nursed both of my boys for a year each. Now I have weaned my sweet Baby B and its a little bittersweet.

At around 10 months of age, I decided to slowly over the two month span work toward using a bottle regularly. I thought it was because of B's extreme love of nursing and cuddling, that was the reason I couldn't sleep at night anymore. Some people sleep really well with their little ones and co-sleeping is a magical bonding time. For me it meant lying awake the whole night counting…

A Birthday Wish

A Birthday Wish

A few years ago, when my oldest turned four, I wrote him a little letter that turned out to be incredibly popular with my readers.

Two years later, for his sixth, I wrote him another…

Hoochie Mama?

Hoochie Mama?

It's hard to believe that I'll be 35 tomorrow.  When I was a kid—and even in my early twenties—35 sounded ridiculously "grown up," and 40 seemed positively ancient.  Yet here I am, feeling perfectly fine about the milestone.

I probably wouldn't be making much of…

Things I've Learned This Week

** Half days of school are only awesome if you're a kid or a teacher.  Or bat shit crazy.

** Birthdays are chock-full of calories.

** Sometimes it's better to pretend like you don't know your family.

** The front of my car is attracted to jackasses who don't drive the speed limit.

** Nothing says I love you quite…

One Greeting Card for Any Occasion

If you are like me, you keep a drawer or file folder full of cards for every occasion – because you never know when you will need a good card at the last minute. The last time I went through my cards, I  realized that there were some that I no longer found funny, appropriate or even nice looking and really wondered why I bought them in the first place (see the not-so-pretty evidence at right).

I gave a bunch to my daughters to use for their art projects and realized…

Going on 13

...When people told me to enjoy the moments of her childhood because they grow up too fast, I rolled my eyes. As I first struggled as a single mother, then with her diagnosis of her reactive attachment disorder, there were many times her childhood couldn’t end fast enough.

Didn't I Just Graduate High School Yesterday?

Today I turn 30! Its kind of weird not being twenty something. It seems like just yesterday I was sitting outside on the football field at my high school graduation listening to commencement speeches and wondering what the next ten years had to offer. What did college have to offer? Where would I go? What would I be when I grew up? I only hoped that by the age of 30 I would be well established in a career with my own family, but those things were so hard to think of at that time. I was excited… Continue

How long is a piece of balloon string? and more importantly what colour?

My first baby boy turned two yesterday. TWO! I can't believe it's been two whole years since I met first met him, coughing and spluttering after being dragged into being. What a blur of love, tears, awe, wonderment and it seems balloon ribbon choices. It's with shame I admit I spent at least 3 minutes discussing the balloon ribbon colour with a long suffering, yet very patient, party warehouse…

Dodging 40

On March 5th, 1971 I was born. Yep, I just turned 40. All year I was talking about the big birthday bash we were going to have at our house – it was going to be quite the event! But the closer my birthday got, the more the idea of throwing a party became one big headache. So I started saying that I would have a party when the weather improved. When friends and family asked, I…

Prepping for My Son's Second Birthday Party!

Today I will be running around getting ready for J Myster's Second Birthday Party. It turns out that we may actually have around 15 people in our house, and I'm freaking out that I may not have enough seating...

I did not make J's cake. I'm not much of a baker, I'm more of a cook. But its Toy Story Themed and If I could have made it Thomas The Train Themed I would have, this Kid requests to watch "Thomas" all the time since we got him a Thomas the train set for Christmas. Maybe next… Continue

J's Birthday Video Collage

Yesterday, I finally put the finishing touches on J's birthday video collage. Last year, his first year of life I made a 24 minute video collage of all J's pictures and videos from birth set to music and I fell so in love with documenting his little life this way, I knew I was going to do this every year.

So just when I was finishing this 28 minute video....yep, Its a year of J's antics compiled into 28 minutes set to music that will make you want to cry. :) Ok, well probably just me… Continue

The Very Merry Unbirthday

The Boy will be 5 in a few weeks. I keep telling him his birthday is coming but it's a concept he can't yet understand.

Another year without a birthday party. No rented venue or an apartment full of kids and their parents. No magician or clown or pinata. No pin the tale on the donkey or musical chairs.

We threw The Boy a party for this 3rd birthday.  In our apartment, with friends and family. But he was overwhelmed, over stimulated and not interested in the crowd of kids in… Continue

Makin' News Monday: No, Please Don't Grow Up

Today is a momentous day on SO many levels. I'm having a hard time digesting the sweeping change that is taking over my home. Last week Bryson turned 5 and now my first baby is one year away from being a teenager....I think I need a bottle of wine.

Twelve years ago I gave birth   Tyler. I was a kid. I knew nothing about the hardships and the joys of motherhood. I had no idea that it would be the most challenging and… Continue

My Birthday Blessings!

So my birthday came and it went and I got tons of beautiful "Happy Birthday" messages from friends on my facebook wall for like 3 whole days!! It was so cool. Also it helps for people to know what you really love. For me its Starbucks everything. From mugs, to gift cards to Christmas Ornaments, I'm into the Starbucks logo as much as my Sister in Law Shannon is into the Coke… Continue

Shy Baby Chubba Cheeks

Two summers ago, these two little girls came unexpectedly into my life. Unexpected because I did NOT want to date anyone who had children. Not because of the children, I love kids. It's the other parent I have problems with and that messy situation is a little too much, so I thought. There's plenty of single childless men in the sea, right?

But.......the man upstairs had other plans (and isn't that JUST what I get for thinking that?).

I am glad he knows better than I,… Continue

Threesome, Anyone?!

Yes, you read that correctly! (*blush*) I admit, I was a little taken aback when The Dirty Mommy Club first asked me to take part in a threesome. Wait, what?? Dirty Mommy Club?? Threesome?? Ummmmm…it all sounds awfully risqué for someone in my, very public, position of power. Though I have to give mad props for her sheer brilliance, because…

Internet Connectivity

Argh – I have been offline intermittently for the past 2 weeks. My family and I are in South Haven Michigan on Lake Michigan for several weeks. Until this summer we had only dial-up Internet, which was simply torture. Although we are on the lakefront and near a good size community, our immediate area is very rural. It takes 10 minutes off the main road onto a windy dirt road to get all the way out to us.

In years past we had no phone machine, no fax machine and minimal connectivity,… Continue
